Question about Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

My Kenmore gas oven sporadically takes forever (30+ min. to heat up to 350 degrees). Sometimes it works fine, & other times it takes at least 1/2 an hour. Also, I periodically smell natural gas when I turn the oven on.

Sounds like a weak ignitor. If it doesn't get hot enough to allow the proper amperage through to the gas valve, you will have this symptom.

Sorry to read about your problem, I hope this helps you out.

ok it seems you have a offset issue, you need to purchase a oven temp gauge. See what the unit read's, lets say you set the oven for 350, does it read 320 or 380. 20 min for 350 is little on the long side, you may have a gas pressure issue.

I would get a 2nd opinion on this matter. and no, they are not all like that.

Oven not heating to desired temperature

You will have to place a amp meter over one ignitor wire and turn the oven on to bake.
If the amp draw is 3.3 amps or less, replace the ignitor.

I'm a landlord and my tenant's oven will not heat up to the proper temperature intermittently. I had a guy come out and test the oven and it works fine, yet my tenant is still complaining the oven is not...

Absolutely. That is the first thing I would think that would cause such a fluctuation of temperatures. BUT if it is a gas oven (WITH A PILOT FLAME) then FIRST consider the thermocouple needing to be changed. If the thermocouple keeps faulting it will shut off gas sporadically and keep the gas off until it resets temporarily on its own.

Oven takes FOREVER to pre-heat

You probably have a bad heating element. Trip the breaker and make sure that all power is removed from the stove/oven. Remove the element, and test it for continuity. If it tests open, obtain a replacement from an appliance parts supply house. If it tests good, you should suspect either a bad switch or thermostat.

Oven temperature does not get hot enough.

Hi, It sounds like the ignitor might be getting weak and opening the gas valve conditantly. Try setting a temperature and watch to see the ignitor glow. The flame should ignite within 30-45 seconds. If the flame ignites to heat rith away, it should get up to temp before shutting down.
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further with this issue.

Thanks

Sounds like that ignitor is weak.  When the ignitor glows it builds up resistance to the gas valve for gas to come in.  If it sometimes takes 10 min then the proper resistance isn't there and this will give you that gas smell.  Replace the ignitor and this should solve your problem.  Can expect to pay $80 - $100 for the part.
