What make and model of projector are you using ? Some of them have a removable spindle cover, for using 200 foot reels.

How to load and view with a gaf 2388 projector

Usually there is a series of clips or levers of some sort that allows the film to pass around the sound drums and alignment path behind the projector lens. There is usually a line printed inside the projector to show the thread path for the film around the various mechanisms. But before you do that you might want to consider finding a photo shop that converts the film to a CD format. All of the old film media breaks down over time and you may be able to enhance it, preserve it and avoid burning it up in the projector(a common occurrence in those days) all at the same time.

I have a minolta autodual 8 film projector but the front reel is turning backwards in the wrong direction. How do I change the direction to turn in the same direction as the back reel.

I assume you haven't put a reel of film onto the projector and looped it through to the back spool. The front spool usually 'freewheels' whilst the film is pulled through the projector and taken up by the motor driven rear spool.
It is possible that the friction drive and/or drive belt have deteriorated with age, as the mentioned projector is a rather elderly 'classic' of the dual 8mm series.
If in doubt, don't risk your family pictures. Try the unit with an old piece of film on small spools.

THREADING FILM IN A ELMO FP-C PROJECTOR

Is your film super 8mm? If yes, then the red sprocket above the lens should be pushed in, and the bottom black sprocket will stick out. If you have regular 8mm, then the black bottom sprocket should be pushed in. If the sprockets are not in the correct position, push the green lever forward (towards the screen) then open the two orange tabs, then push in the correct sprocket. Once you have the correct sprockets aligned, close the orange tabs. How to tell if you have 8mm or super 8mm film: Look carefully at the film image. If the sprocket hole is next to the middle of the image, it's super 8mm. If the sprocket hole is between images, it's 8mm.

HAVING TROUBLE THREADING FILM - ELMO FP-C

If your green lever is stuck in the forward position, that's because the film is not threaded. Once your film threads correctly, the green lever will spring back.

How do I thread the film through an 8mm B&H Projector

http://www.folkstreams.net/vafp/stream.php?id=97

It's about four and a half minutes long, and shows how to clean the various components that need cleaning beforehand as well as how to thread the projector.

However, I wish you good bloody luck on finding a bulb, if you don't have one that still works. From the look of the unit, it uses a DAR bulb, which was delisted (read: went out of production) thirty years ago. You can sometimes find new old-stock (NOS) DAR bulbs on eBay, but expect to pay $30 to $35 apiece plus shipping for them.

Replacement screws for connecting the power wires

The smaller screws should have been 5mm dia with a 0.8mm thread pitch. The larger ones are probably 8mm dia. with a 1.25mm thread pitch.

Is 5/16 too large or too small? If 5/16 is too large, the screw is probably 7mm.

Do you have one of the original B+/ground screws? If so, it should be easy to measure it and get the correct size.
