Use a flexible feeler gauge to measure the gap. The magneto gap for any 2-cycle engine chain saw should 12-18 thousands of an inch. The gap is much less important than simply NOT HITTING the coil frame at any point on the flywheel. The nut is probably metric but I cannot tell you what size it should be. BE CAREFUL! Some chain saws have LEFT HANDED THREADS on such shafts! But you can usually tell by studying the protruding threads at the nut ... if there are any!

I'd like to know what steps to take to replace the contact points on a 1978 Poulan Micro XXV Super Deluxe 14" chain saw

Its a long time since i saw one of these, however, start by removing the starter cover screws and the starter itself, you need to remove the flywheel nut,1/2 spanner as far as i remember, strike the non magnet side of the flywheel with a suitable hammer, the flywheel should just pop off, remove the points back plate cover, this should just pull off, the points and condensor are all one peice, held with two screws, either clean the points or replace the assembly, the back plate will have slots to allow you to set the points gap, the gap is between 12 and 15 thousands of an inch, put a small amount of grease on the felt pad against the cam, refit the flywheel and nut, take care to re fit it onto the woodruff key properly, the air gap between the coil and the flywheel should be set at approx 0.5mm, re fit the starter and check for a spark.

You may need to use a jumper wire between the threaded part of the plug and the cooling fins. You do not have to bend up the electrode.

Ignition module gap
Place a business or index card between the fly wheel and coil, rotate until the magnetic attraction pulls everything tight together. Tighten the coil screws, rotate the flywheel until the attraction eases and remove the card. Ensure nothing contacts when the flywheel is rotated.

Ignition coil gap:
An index or business card is a good gap tool. Remove the plug, rotate until magnetic attraction pulls coil and card tight to flywheel, tighten the coil screws. Rotate flywheel until magnetic attraction eases, remove card, rotate a couple of revolutions and ensure nothing drags or contacts flywheel. HTH
