Question about Ford 8N Tractor

Starter gear shatered,has been repaired.Where are the fragments laying in the bottom of the crank case, and how dose one remove them?

Hot oil flush with [cheap oil & little kero or a cup of diesel mixed in too to help it flow faster & use a magnet fastened to a length of wire! to reach in to motor [ but make sure it cant be dislodged!!! ]
when you cnt find any more metal in the flush or on the magnet you may have got it all [NO GUARANTEE THOUGH ] if you dont feel like its all out then you have to strip it down to make sure!!
Fit a magnetic drainplug to the sump [oil pan] on all your vehicles!!!
Its a good cheap way to check oil during servicing for any metal filings which indicates wear or damge b4 they grenade!!!!

Likely either the starter or solenoid. Solenoid is a combination of relay and actuator, pushing the starter's gear into engagement with your flywheel.

Forget the timing chain as the crankshaft will turn if the starter is running. If it is an automatic there is a possibility that the flex plate attached to the crankshaft and the torque converter has failed and is turning by itself. ( remove the inspection plate to check tis out). IT does happen that the pinion drive override clutch on the starter has failed which will require a new pinion gear assembly. have it checked out by an accredited auto electrician

MY 1996 JEEP CHEROKEE will not crank, replaced the starter and charged the battery. I get a high whine when i attempt to start


Does it go rrrrrrt? try haveing key out of ignition, turn motor a bit by hand (with a socket on balancer bolt) Then try to start. If starts you will probably need a new ring gear (big job, gearbox out) Ring gear can be inpected by removeing inpection plate from bottom of bell houseing if it has an inspection cover otherwise remove starter & turn motor by hand whilst inspecting ring gear. starter drive gear meshes with ring gear & wears only in o couple of places

Change front main seal , leaking oil around timing chain cover. could be seal around harmonica balancer.


yes, I just changed one of these recently. Had to take both front and bottom off engine. Very difficult repair, as there are no good jack points for the engine when you have all the motor mounts off.
Here is procedure I would recommend.
Remove starter and engine to transmission brackets front and back.
Remove transmission starter gear cover.
drain oil and remove oil pan.
put a block under the crankshaft and jack to release weight on motor mount.
remove front motor mount (by serpentine belt)
remove belt.
remove compressor and bracket.
remove crank pulley and vib damper.
remove timing cover. mark timing belt with direction of travel
loosen tensioner gear.
remove timing belt.
remove crankshaft timing gear and key.
remove seal and oil pump housing.
clean gasket surfaces.
replace seal and reverse procedure.

I need to know how to dis/reassemble a 1974 DT 360?


A service manual ( if you can find one ) is what you need. The second thing you need is repair parts. They are pretty hard to find. Babbitt's, a well known distributor, only has parts left in stock for the top end. Go to their website, www.babbittsonline.com/parts/viewbybrand/parts.aspx
and you can see what is left. There's also a diagram of the crankcase center halves. If you can't get the repair parts, spending hours doing an engine teardown is fruitless.

The teardown will require a flywheel puller, a case splitter, an impact driver, and a torque wrench (somewhat optional). Disassemble the top end then remove the left and right side case covers. Remove the flywheel and related electrics, the clutch, crankshaft drive gear, oil pump, kick starter, shift shaft assembly, shift drum end cap and index pins. Now remove the screws on the center case and you can then split the case. This gives you access to replace shift forks, gears, and bearings. Note that crank seals can be replaced without splitting the case.

I am not trying to be a smart *** here, but re-assembly is just the reverse of dis-assembly. This is why a manual would help. Another potential source for parts is to Google motorcycle salvage yamaha .
The normal things you would need to replace inside the center case would be bent shift forks (if shifting is the problem), busted gears, crank bearings and seals, and sprocket shaft bearing and seal. All else can be replaced by removing just the side covers.

98 yamaha grizzly atv my starter just goes click how can i check if this is a solenoid problem all my battery connections are tight & clean


take a screw driver and lay it across the solenoid. if the engine cranks the solenoid is bad, if it still dose no turn over either the starter its self is bad, or the battery is junk. have the battery tested before you go buy any other parts.

Starter Cranks slow. New Battery


If the starter of your car crank slowly it means that there is a problem in the starter assembly.The owner of the car should work on the starter . the owner of the car should be able to locate and repair the starter .prepare the tools and equipment in repairing the starter .So that when the starter will function properly.First you have to remove the starter to the engine :disconnect the starter magnetic switch to the ignition switch and the battery.And dis-assemble the starter : first remove all electrical wires from the starter motor,remove the bolt from end head cover and cover band, remove frame assembly ,remove the solenoid remove the bendix drive pin,remove the pinnion housing, remove the lock ring,then remove the pinnion gear assembly.check if there are worn out or malfunctioning parts then repair or replace them.after repairing and replacing the worn out parts then assemble and install the starter back to the engine. If the owner of the car can't do the job done the owner of the car should go to a car shop mechanic , and let the car mechanic do the job.

Cranks fine, won't "catch"


From what u describe, I believe u have a starter and possibly a flywheel problem. When u turn the key to start the car, the starter gear engages w/ the flywheel, turning the flywheel, which turns the engine over. It sounds like the teeth of the flywheel and starter are worn, (they should mesh together smoothly) which would make the grinding noise u describe. If this is the case, the flywheel and starter would need to be replaced, and its a labor intensive job, as engine and trans. have to be separated to remove/install the flywheel. The rrrrrrr sound could be the starter gear spinning but not engaging. The starter gear extends on a shaft, then engages the flywheel. It is possible the gear isn't moving forward on the shaft, just spinning w/out engaging, making the rrr sound. So, I would recommend u remove the starter and have it tested (many parts stores will do this for free) and check the teeth on the gear to see if they are worn or broken. U will also be able to see a portion of the flywheel after the starter is removed, and u should check the teeth on it also. Let me know what u find, hopefully it's just a starter problem, and the flywheel is ok.

Ducati starter motor


I have 2 monsters in my barn right now, the starter motor is, well is not the easiest. First, is it the starter gone bad or the relay? Check the fuse. Then check the relay, bottom right of the air filter housing, rubber mounted, make sure it cliks when the key is on and the starter button is hit, then check the battery, make sure it is good, then if all this checks out, check the wiring. If it is still a bad starter, remove the crank case cover on the left, rotate the starter gear to align the bolt, unscrew the 3 bolts, and replace the gasket when putting in the new starter. Don't forget to take the battery negative off, and wire on the starter motor. Good luck.
