Question about Garden

1 Answer

My 18.5 hp briggs was not turning over, acted like it was fighting compresion. Valves were lose set valves at .004. started right up but blew alot of gas out. Ran good for about 5mins then it stalled and stated to blow blue smoke. It will stop can restart but it will start the same thing. It also blows oil out the fill tube if you take the cap off. Terry

The oil out the fill tube is normal with the cap off, believe me I know about those un expected showers. Your problem sounds like fouled plugs because of the gas bath. Put in a new plug/plugs and I'm sure you'll be all set.

the starter is probably fine. the valves are out of spec. from what you described. if the valves are not set correctly they will not open and close right. take the valve covers of and check to see what they are. ill bet they are way off the should be at .004 and .006. just set them both at .005 and it will start as good as it did when it was new. its a good idea to check all of the electrical connections to be sure they are are all clean and tight.

I have a 24 hp briggs, model 445777, type

I believe this does have comression release. Make sure you're rotating the motor in the correct direction, as I think the compression release only works in one direction. Adjust the valve to .004 with the piston at TDC make sure it's on the power stroke. Turn the motor till intake opens, then when you continue to rotate crank, unitl valve closes and piston gets back to TDC. Adjust both valves to .004. Then do the other cylinder the same way.

Have the battery tested at an auto parts store to ensure there is enough power in it. Sounds like it's strong enough to turn the motor with no compression (spark plug removed) but too weak to turn the motor with compression. Also check for loose or corroded wires.

Try pulling out the choke a little, if it stops backfiring the mixture is too lean, check the intake
pipes at the cyl head and also the plastic runners to the carb for leaks.
