This is a common problem with some VHS units. The problem is that the tape does not fully extend over the video head and the slack sensor shuts the unit off. This involves the motor and driving mechanism that actuates the spreader arms that moves the tape. Usually this is caused by slippage of a small rubber belt.
Though the repair work involve is relatively easy, removing the mechanism and replacing the belt would require that you be familiar with component placement and certain timing sequence of tape loading. Your best bet probably would be to seek the services of a qualified professional.
Hope this be of some help/idea. post back how things are or should you need additional information.
good luck and kind regards.
