Problem in the safety clutch area
ensure that the safety bar is fully back and engaged before pressing trigger
the safety bar is that handle at you fingers when you are holding the the saw handle and by moving , flicking your fingers forward it stops the chain action
if that is fully engaged , it will require servicing by any accredited chainsaw repair shop

What would cause a new chain saw not to cut

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it sounds like you are saying your chainsaw is newer and runs fine, but it just isn't cutting wood well?

If that is the case then it means the chain wasn't sharpened correctly. Lots of guys do it at home and don't file down the raker teeth in front of the cutter heads, so the teeth don't grab into the wood and just nibble at the wood and make fine sawdust. It is always best to get the chain sharpened at a saw shop first so you can get an idea of the correct angles and depth of the rakers etc. After that you can try to match the saw shop for a while with a round file to take off ragged edges unless you have a decent professional saw sharpening unit.

How to adj the crab on a poulan chainsaw

if the engine is in good shape..screw in both carb jets adjusting screws till they seat lightly, then back them out 1 1/2 turns, srew in the throttle adj screw a turn and start the motor,,warning if the chain is on make sure the blade isnt likely to touch anything when the engine starts as you will have to have the brake off to get started and adjusted. With the engine running, adjust the throttle srew until it is idling just above shutting off speed, then adjust the "L" low speed jet to get the best idling speed without srewing it in much, reset the throttle srew, then , while trying to accelerate suddenly each time, open the Low jet a little at a time until the machine accelerates smoothly without hesitation. Reset the throttle srew to a position that the chain stops running at idle and check again that the acceleration is without hesitation ( usually with "L" jet about 1/4 turn out more than best idling). The high "H" jet can now be set to give the best power while cutting a block of wood.

Generally this is a fuel / air ratio problem. Usually it can be solved by a carb adjustment. On the carb there are usually two screws, one marked low or L , the other marked high or H. Low is your adjustment for idle mixture, high is for mixture at full throttle. The saw should Always be adjusted to run well during the cut. Make adjustments a little at a time, then try The saw. Continue small adjustments untill the saw is performing well at full throttle while Cutting.

In front of the handle on top of the saw is a hand guard. If in the course of cutting wood you hit it or pushed it forward, it will lock up the chain drive system. It should pull back towards the handle until it again clicks to release the chain. It's designed to lock up the chain drive and stop the chain when the saw kicks back.

How do i know if chain is on correctly/

Does the chain move when the motor is started? Make sure the chain doesn't droop from the lower side of the bar and the teeth cut toward you on the bottom side. The chain should not be so tight that you can't move it by hand. Run the saw for a few moments with the tip near a piece of cardboard--it should throw off a thin line of oil onto the cardboard. Make sure that the chain is properly sharpened and cuts without undue effort. Hope this helps!

Remington Polesaw 10" motor is smoking?

Sounds like either the motor is going or that you need a new chain. Is the chain old and dull and is it difficult to cut wood? If so I would try running the saw without cutting and see if the motor smokes. If so the motor may be on it's way out. If you smell an electrical motor winding smell, it's probably time for a new chain saw. I don't know that I would get a new motor for yours as it probably at least $50 and you might want to consider going to another brand like Poulan. Hope this helps!

I can't get the idel set on the McCulloch Mac130 chain saw. It runs wide open. When you try to idle it dies out.

Try turning the L needle CW to stop (lightly), then back out CCW 1-3/4 turns. Turn the idle speed screw CW about 1 turn. Start the engine and let warm up. Set the idle speed screw so that the engine keeps running but doesn't pull the chain. Turn the L needle CW until the engine runs fairly smoothly, yet allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Make sure the H needle is adjusted at full speed for 4-stroking, but immediately 2-strokes when starting to cut wood. If the above idle mix (L) adjustment doesn't help, you will likely need to clean the idle jets within the carburetor. Hope this helps!

CHAIN SAW QUITS CUTTING AS IT HITS WOOD.

The make, model, and occationally the serial number help us solve your problem.

Does the engine quit running? (Carburator needs adjustment)
Or does it continue running and chain stops? (need clutch refaced or replaced.) (to aggressive a chain for the size of the engine)

I think you replaced parts unnecessarily. Maybe quicker and cheaper to visit your friendly neighborhood chainsaw shop. A good one can repair it even if they do not sell your brand.

Ryobi 14 inch electric chainsaw won't cut with new chain

Hi Rossmac,

Both the smoke and it's lack of cutting ability are symptoms of the same problem. The Chain is dulled. Instead of cutting, it's just rubbing on the wood and heating up. It's also not a big deal to fix..

Your options are:
  • Replace the Chain
  • Have the Chain sharpened
  • Sharpen it yourself
To sharpen it yourself, you will need a narrow round file that will fit inside the Chain teeth. Each tooth has a two cutting edges, get the file a position that matches the tooths angle of attack. Don't over do, three to five swipes of the file should do it on each surface.

You will see they alternate directions. You may find it easier to do all the teeth in one direction (skipping every other tooth) then do the other direction. Up to you.

When you are done, check the level of your chain oil. Since it did get hot, you might manually oil the chain before trying out your handi-work.

Go cut some wood.
Mike
