How do I reinstall the alternator belt on a 91 plymouth acclaim? I dont see a tensioner and cant get the belt back on once it is bolted in place

these have a serpentine belt and the tensioner is below the alternator and requires a special tool to move it. you can try using a wrench that will fit on the belt tensioner but you won`t have much room to move it. look under the hood around the upper rad support for a decal it may still be there. if it is it shows the belt routing and were the tensioner is.

A good mechanic with all the special tools can do it in an hour. Releasing and reinstalling the serpentine belt is what the special tool is needed for. the rest is simple socket wrenches to get the mounting bolts out.

  1. First drape the belt on all pulleys except the alternator.
  2. On the 2.2L engine, use a 15 mm drive tool or a special belt removal tool to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
  3. On the 2.4L engine, use a 13mm drive tool or a special belt removal tool to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
  4. While holding the tensioner, slip the belt onto the alternator pulley

Does 2004 chevy cavalier need a special tool for changing the serpintine belt?

It would be helpful, but no special tools are required. Just look at what size bolt is on the Belt Tensioner, because that's where you will have to use a wrench to apply pressure in order to relieve pressure to take belt out. Good Luck.

How to replace a/c compressor pully? what is the alternator belt size with out a/c compressor installed? THANK YOU!!

The compressor pulley requires a special puller and installer to service it. These kits cost about $30. Most parts houses carry this tool. Many have a tool rental program for such a tool.

You will have to inquire at your local parts house as to if a belt is offered that is less the AC option. My guess is that your car was never available without this option.

We changed the alternator and can't get the belt back on,,,,help.

Have you attached a socket and bar to the belt tensioner, and released the tension on the belt, which will allow you to slip the belt on? I'm not sure of the exact set up on the Escort, some engines are more difficult than others to get a wrench on the tensioner, you can purchase a special tool if there is not enough room (if you purchase the belt from a parts store, many will loan you the tool). The special tool has a long thin handle for easier access to the bolt, and the long handle provides good leverage to easily move it.

Can you tell me how i change my supertintine belt on my gmc envoy and do i need a special tool?

No special tools are required to change the serpentine belt on your Envoy. You just need to lift the belt tensioner from the belt. All that is required is a 1/2" breaker bar and the corrent socket to fit on the tensioner.

Water pump

It's time-consuming, as requires removing aux drivebelt (with alternator etc on it), and the cam belt. Well worth replacing the cam belt, aux belt and crankshaft oil seal while there. It's quite hard, but no special tools needed - except the Honda manual/instructions for setting up correctly (unless you mark the belt and replace exactly on pulleys).

Some do need a square drive to apply pressure to the idler. But why should you need to pay for one?

Have you asked what's up with the alternator? often it's just the regulator that needs replacing - or the brushes. See HERE for examples. Too many are scrapped just for want of these.

If they haven't got the tools, take it somewhere that does know what they're doing (and buy a belt online while you're at it).

Thanks for using Fixya!
