Question about Heating & Cooling

Open Question

My raypak 106A analog pool heater stopped working. There is usually a clicking sound when the water pressure switch activates.

I've tried adjusting the switch but I can't get it to click even though it seems to be getting power. I don't think it's the switch because I tried 'hot wiring' the connection but the gas value still doesn't click on. The flame roll-out safety switch seems fine. I have a Multimeter. I would like someone to help me do basic troubleshooting to pinpoint the problem.

Chances are when you bypass the switch the machine knows it's not there, therefore safety kicks in. Check continuity through all your safety switches. Good Luck.

Why won't my poool heater start? I have a 3-year old Raypak 130 pool heater that won't ignite. I don't even hear it trying to ignite so I am thinking it is a switch or circuit problem. Thoughts?

check to see if pressure switch is closed if not check copper line to it if ok check ignitor if ohms out ok disconnected should be 78 ohms at 70 degrees if shorted or open bad and relace also check for fuses

Heater fires up and is hot but does not heat the water. Raypak Versa bronze

This unit must have adequate water flow and apparently needs to be checked for proper operation.

Consider the following:

The unit as manufactured is equipped with:
  • pressure switch - likely stuck in the on condition, or been has been bypassed
  • Thermostat - Needs to be checked to insure it is properly working and calibrated.
  • Hi-limit switches - need to be checked to insure they are working and not bypassed.
  • flame sensor - prevents flame from leaving the firebox and damaging control area. (if equipped)
  • Flow Governor - controls water flow through the heat exchanger to prevent over pressure.
If the pressure switch is working properly, a blockage after the heater, would create pressure, but not enough flow. Check for a closed valve or obstruction in the plumbing.

If the problem is a clogged filter, and the filter is located before the heater, then the pressure switch is NOT working correctly and needs to be replaced or adjusted to factory settings. Remove the filter cartridge and check for flow.

Bottom line is:

No flow and no pressure, - heater should not come on.
No flow, but pressure, heater would come on and overheat, tripping hi-limit.
Good flow, heater would come on and spa would heat.

RP2100 GOES ON AND OFF REPEATEDLY

If you received the PRS error, then it is the water pressure switch. The water pressure switch, or heater actuator, ensures
that the heater operates only when the filter pump is in
operation. It is located on the inlet/outlet header. It is
factory set at 1.75 PSI for deck-level installations.
When the heater is located below the level of the spa
or pool, it may be necessary to adjust the pressure
switch to compensate for the no-flow static head. If it
is necessary to adjust the water pressure switch, Follow the directions in your manual. If your is the low Nox model, then you have a combustion fan. This has a fan air pressure switch but the error code for it is FAN I believe. If you don't have a manual you can get one at www.raypak.com

Raypak 2100 Heater wont fire unless the pressure switch is jumped. Replaced pressure switch and still same issue. Whats next?

Usually when these are plumbed in there is a bypass valve allowing you to run your filter and system withouth the heater. There would be a valve before and after the heater (which should be open) and a valve connecting the inlet and outlets ( this valve should be closed) Make sure you're not "bypassing: most of the water flow. If this isn't the problem then try the following: This switch is designed to prove flow. If you don't have enough flow to cause enough back pressure to make switch, then it assumes you dont' have flow. First make sure your filter is clean, and your skimmer and pump baskets are clean so you're pumping maximum volume of water. If these are clean have an assistant or two hold their hands on your discharge ports in the pool. If this backpressure cause the switch to close then you might try slightly smaller return jets to your pool. You can not the pressure on your filter and compare it to the pressure setting on the switch.

Raypak 2100 pool heater won't heat, PRS and HL2 error codes.

Well, I replaced the pressure switch with no joy. I tried all 5 levels of pressure 1-5 and every wiring combination. Finally, I returned the new $70 pressure switch and took the 2 wires and tied them together (jumped them). Here's the only downside...If you run your pump in backwash, recirc, waste, or any mode that would cause water to bypass the heater it MUST BE OFF. Otherwise, let it ride. It's working great and I hope to go into October weather permitting.

Need flow rate and pressure adjustment proceedure for an old raypack 266 not electronic.thanks murray

The maximum flow rate for that heater to be installed in without a bypass is 125 GPM. The owner's manual can guide you thru gas pressure adjustments or adjusting the set point of the water pressure switch. Please note that unless you are installing the unit below or significantly above the water line you should not have to adjust the pressure switch. Whenever you do adjust it, be certain to turn the pump on and off several times to be certain the heater reacts to the pump condition...failure to shut down when the pump does can be a serious and dangerous condition.
