Re: garmin forerunner 301

the garmin gps often use a soft rubber in their contruction
either wait til the unit is out of the heat or use a bit more pressure to push the button doen firmly

the map60 range has the same issue with the power on/off buttons
there is no replacement parts as its built into the case

Which operating system is on the computer?
The Foretrex is not compatible with Windows® 95, 98, Me, or NT. It is also not compatible with Mac® OS 10.3 and earlier. This is a common limitation of most USB mass storage devices.

Also, check to be sure that the USB cable is not defective.

Forrunner 301 won't turn on or charge

You can try various resets to see if you can get it to respond.
Have you tried plugging the unit into the wall instead of the USB
port.Do you get the Battery Charging message at any time. You can
try a soft reset.Press mode and reset. Then try to power on while
plugged in.A hard reset will delete all your data and settings from
the Forerunner.Press the Power and the Mode button until the unit
comes on and asks if you want to erase all user data.Select Yes.
If the above won't work, try a hard reset that by-passes the
confirmation screen.Press Mode, Reset and Power.

My forerunner will no longer turn on or even charge, can they be repaired or am I best to buy a new unit?

Garmin will repair it for about eighty bucks.

But first, try cleaning the electrical contacts on the forerunner and the cradle by rubbing them with a pencil eraser. The slight abrasive should remove any oxidation on the metal. A bad contact between the unit and the cradle could be your problem.

Change battery on Garmin Forerunner 301

Hi - look at this solution for a forerunner 201, which has the same case design. I was just looking myself! R_nz Rank: Apprentice Rating: 96%, 8 votes I've made some progress here, I discovered that there is a small notch beneath the flat black pastic insert that holds the rubber button cover in. By gently prising this out, I can at least expose the pcb with the buttons on. I still can't figure out how to open the case though ****! Comments: Jan 29, 2008 - Well, I got there in the end! As above, I managed to prise the plastic insert cover off the rubber button cover, the peeeled this off as well. Underneath is a mylar printed circuit with the silver domeos of the buttons moulded in. This is siliconed down, but you can peel it up with a fingernail. The top left end (above the on button) is aatached inside the case, so start at the other end. Jan 29, 2008 - .ctd.. Once you have lifted the mylar strip, you can get at the case seam underneath and prise it gently open with a flat blade. The case is glued together with a light silicon or something. My problem was unresponsive buttons and by detaching and then re-attaching the small connector by the big silver block where the mylar attaches to the main board and then re-attaching it, it seemed to fix it! :-) Oct 22, 2008 - As an end-note; I glued my 201 back together with a light Silicone sealer. It seems to be at least rain proof anyway. Forerunner 201 battery replacement (Expert level): Opening the 201 was not easy and could not be done 100% clean, but thanks to R_nz (above) I got it open. My problem was dead (almost) battery, after 6 years of superb operation. I found the battery to be glued (double sided tape) to the back cover. To remove, push it up slowely and pull out. Beware of the short wires. 1. It is a flat battery, wrapped in shrinkable tube. Made by MDTechnology, P/N 043048 3.7V, 500mAh see 2. On the cover, the battery is soldered to the underside of a small PCB, hard to get to (by expert!). If you find a battery, suggest to cut the wires and solder wire-to-wire. Hope that helps

Garmin Forerunner 205 Battery won't charge. A few

Hey everyone. Just called Garmin and got it fixed. Sometimes the forerunner goes into power saver mode and needs to be reset

1. Hook up the usb cable and docking station to the computer.
2. Next, hook up your forerunner to the Docking station - It should pop up saying battery charging in progress
3. Leave it all hooked up and Hold the Mode and Lap/Reset Button together for 15 seconds - screen should go blank.
4. Let both go - should pop back up saying battery charging in progress.
5. Let Charge 20 minutes and it should be good to go.

Hope this helps!!!

Garmin Foreruner 305 will not turn on or charge

I had the exact same problem and thought my beloved forerunner 305 had finally died. Try pressing the lap and mode keys simultaneously, and then power on. That may do a "soft reset." Worked for me.

Opening forerunner 305

I have a problem with my 305 whereby the mode button stopped working so semi pulled mine apart.

If you look at the 305 from the side you can see where the rubber bit covers the buttons. The bottom of the rubber bit is attached to the rear of the forerunner - don't try to detach it - I munted mine a bit detaching it. At the top of the rubber, nearest the face you'll see a small gap. Follow the gap anti clockwise from the power button down to bottom left corner of the face near where the wrist strap pin is. Here you'll see the gap is plastic on plastic on plastic. I believe a thumbnail or similar in here and worked around carefully will let you pry the face off. I stuck my thumbnail in there and got the face to lift 1-2mm before I backed off. Note I didn't go any further than that.

For my problem by the time I had munted the rubber cover and was able to operate the mode button with a paperclip I new it was dead so didn't bother going any further as I could still use the 305 in reduced mode without mode changing.

Garmin Forerunner 201 won't turn on

I had the same problem and this is what Garmin had me do. Charge it for 3 hours then try the reset again by holding RESET and POWER at the same time for 30 seconds. If still no-go the unit will have to be repaired. Garmin's base fixing price is about 80 dollars. I didn't want to pay that so I found a new one on eBay for 50 bucks.
