Accessing the speedometer cable to lubricate on 1990 F-150


You can do it one of 3 ways...
a. Remove the Instrument Cluster from in front of the wheel, Lubricate
b. Remove the Cable from Under the dash and Lubricate
c. Remove the Cable from the Transmission and Lubricate.

Removing BOTH ends and cleaning first from Pressure TOP to Transmission is highly recommended and injecting a Light Lithium Grease I have found to give the best results but if you are having a problem with the Speedometer Cable itself... They are inexpensive and easy to replace. That is what I would do if it was making noise.. Less than $30 for a new cable

Transmission Fluid Fill
  1. Remove the Speedometer Cable Sleeve (17B301) and Speedometer Gear (17271). Refer to the procedure in this section.
  1. Fill the transaxle with Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose ATF XT-2-QDX. Refer to Transmission Fluid Capacity for specifications.
  1. Check the transmission fluid level. Refer to the procedure in this section.

My heat won;t blow hot air just cold.........what's the problem


The blend door actuator is probably stuck or the gear in the actuator could be stripped. If it is just stuck it can be reached by removing the passenger side air bag assembly and the the adjacent dash support brace. Using a small bent hook on the end of a coathanger pull carefully on the blend door lever until it moves toward you.

If that does not solve the problem you will need to replace the actuator which will require total removal of the dash to gain access to the top of the plenum.

Having a hard time putting my car in gear. It has to warmm up in order to engage the button on the shifter to put the car in gear.


The shifter knob that houses the button may be worn out or the shifter mechanism may need to be lubricated. You can try spraying a little WD-40 around the shift button and into the shift knob using the straw provided with the spray can.
To lubricate the shifter, the shift knob will have to be removed and the shift plate removed to gain access to the shifter mechanism.

Yes it is the cable type. The instrument cluster must first be removed. Depress the retaining clip on the back of the cluster to release the speedometer cable. Once the end of the speedometer drive cable is exposed, grip the inner cable with pliers and draw it out of the housing. Installation is the reverse of removal, but lubricate the entire cable. Use special speedometer cable lubricant, Not oil, for this purpose. Insert the cable into the housing using a twisting movement until the lower end is felt to engage with the pinion gear at the transmission. You can also check the Pinion Gear at the transmission, That is where the speedometer cable connects to the transmission. Some times these small nylon gears will strip out caused from no lubrication in the speedometer cable housing. If the above does not solve your problem you may need to change out the cluster itself to obtain a good working speedometer head. Good Luck and Happy New Year. From Ernie @ RedDeer, Alberta, Canada.

good day Sir, In order to gain access to the rear of the stereo for either connection to, or replacement of the factory unit, you must first remove the panel surrounding the (manual) gear stick. This should not be attempted with any form of 'level' to avoid damage to the dash finish. To remove the surround simply press fingers into the gear gaiter to gain purchase behind the panel and firmly 'pull' the panel toward you to disengage from the clips that hold it in place. The main panel above requires removal which involves location and loosening (not necessarily removal) of two hex headed screws approximately 6 inches (150mm) down from the head unit behind the panel, which screw the vertical metal plates holding the panel to the under dash mountings. To gain access to the screws push the two stops on the glove box inwards to allow the glove box to swing downwards. On the other side remove the small panel under the steering column Once loosened, the entire stereo/ heater control panel may be pulled toward you to disengage the clips that hold it in position. Reassembly is the reverse of removal, ensuring that the screw slots are properly engaged before final tightening of screws and reinstallation of gear stick surround.i hope this will help you

Speedometer Cable replacement


A universal kit will work for your application. Most of the time the center cable is what is damaged.

1. Remove speedometer cable from transmission
2. Remove speedo gear retainer and remove speedo gear.
3. Pull out cable from sheath - If broken you will only get part of it
4. Remove instrument panel and pull out section of cable still trapped in cable sheath if applicable.

For re install follow directions on package.

Pointers

1. Cable appears un-damaged: Check to make sure the speedo gear is not damaged where the cable enters it. Then also check the back of the speedo head cable hole for damage.
2. You can measure you two broken pieces to arrive at an appropriate length for ordering purposes.
3. Make sure this is well lubricated on install otherwise the speedo can jump up and down or damage the new cable.

Depending on which part of the dash, if it's the odometer/speedometer back light or air temperature console ( center of the dash ) back light, you need to open and remove the covers and trims around these parts to gain access to small 12v light bulbs, you can easily pull 'em out of the socket and insert the new ones in place. you can find car light bulbs in Auto Zone or any other car parts dealer shops. Transfer Case - FLUID RECOMMENDATIONS
The type of lubricant used in the transfer case varies with model year and type of transfer case. Refer to the list below for the type that applies to your truck.

1980
Conventional transfer cases require SAE 80W or SAE 80W-90 GL-5 gear lubricant.
Full time systems use SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40 engine oil.
1981
Conventional transfer cases require DEXRON®II transmission fluid.
1982-85
All transfer cases require DEXRON®II transmission fluid.
1986-87
All transfer cases except the K30/35 series require DEXRON®II transmission fluid.

For fluid recommendations for the K30/35 transfer cases refer to the owner's manual.
LEVEL CHECKS

Check the four wheel drive transfer case lubricant level every 4 months or 6,000 miles.
  1. With the truck parked on a level surface and the parking brake firmly applied, remove the filler plug from the rear of the transfer case (behind the transmission). Be careful not to take out the drain plug at the bottom.
  2. If lubricant trickles out, there is enough. If not, carefully insert a finger and check that the level is up to the edge of the hole, EXCEPT in full time four wheel drive cases should be 1 /2 in. below the hole.
Lubricant may be added, if necessary, with a funnel and tube, or a squeeze bulb.



DRAIN AND REFILL
Part Time Systems
No intervals are specified for changing transfer case lubricant, but it is a good idea for trucks that are worked hard or driven in deep water.
  1. With the transfer case warmed up, park on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
  2. Slide a pan of a least 6 pts. capacity under the case drain plug.
  3. Remove the filler plug from the rear of the transfer case (behind the transmission). Remove the drain plug from the bottom.
  4. Wipe the area clean and replace the drain plug.
  5. Add lubricant with a suction gun or squeeze bulb. Conventional transfer cases require SAE 80W-90 GL-5 Gear Lubricant.
  6. When the lubricant level is up to the bottom of the filler hole, replace the plug.
Full Time Four Wheel Drive
The full time system requires oil changes at regular intervals, according to the amount and type of work done by the unit. Trucks used for normal on-off road work should have the transfer case oil changed at 24,000 mile intervals. When used for heavy duty work, trailer towing, snowplowing, and the like, the interval should be halved to 12,000 miles. If the truck is exposed to extremely dusty or muddy conditions, the oil should be changed at 1,000 mile intervals.
The transfer case oil must be hot before changing. Drive the truck until the engine has reached normal operating temperature, and park on a level surface.
  1. Slide a pan of at least 8 pts. capacity under the case drain plug.
  2. Remove the filler plug.
  3. Remove the lowest bolt from the front output shaft rear bearing retainer cover, and allow the lubricant to drain. Be careful; the oil will be hot. There may be a drain plug. If so, remove that instead.
  4. Remove the six bolts on the left (driver's) side of the case which secure to P.T.O. (power take-off) cover. Remove this cover and allow the lubricant to drain out.
  5. Remove the speedometer driven gear from the upper left rear corner of the case.
  6. Use a suction gun to remove as much lubricant as possible from the case cover location and the speedometer gear location.
  7. Install the speedometer driven gear, the P.T.O. cover, and the lowest bolt or drain plug.
  8. Add approximately seven pints of oil through the filler plug opening. The proper oil to use is 10W-30 or 10W-40 engine oil.
  9. Check the fluid level and add sufficient oil to raise the level to 1 /2 in. below the filler plug opening. Replace the plug, and wipe the surfaces of the case and skid plate to remove any excess oil. Drive the truck and check for leaks.
