Question about GASKET Garden

1 Answer

My mercury 9.9 2 stroke bogs down in gear and "chugs" (not backfire but hesitates) when in gear unless I have the choke pulled all the way. Neutral is fine, revs up with no issue.

I disassembled the lower end and found the exhaust pipe clogged with carbon (couldn't see through it) I cleaned it all out and reassembled. No change. I do have black oil coming from the prop (exhaust duct). I rebuilt the carb with a new gasket and diaphram kit, no change. Tested the coils, adequate spark. I'm running out of ideas.

I have a 1997 mercury mountaineer started kind of chugging backfired changed plugs wires and now both coils it pops chugs has no power was running fine then just started this outta the blue need help

Mountaineers are very notorious for poor Timing Chain Systems and it may have slipped a few degrees and this will cause the notorious backfires.
Replace the Timing Chain Guides and re-time it and it will solve the backfire and sluggishness

I have 20hp mercury in neutral can rev high but when in gear full throttle it's like trolling speed

Take the cover off and check that the throttle linkages are all secured to the clips. May also be bad fuel, or moisture in the fuel. I use stabiliser over the winter. With a motor stored that long, it would be prudent to get it professionally serviced.

Is my choke on my 97 suzuki vz800. Supposed to be

You should be able to adjust the choke to where it will stay in without holding it by turning the rubber piece behind the choke clockwise towards you until the choke stays out on its own. You can adjust this so the choke automatically adjust as the bike warms.
Hope this helps..
