Question about PfaFF Sewing Machines

2 Answers

Hi, I have a Pfaff Varimatic 6091. I sewed some 'too thick' fabric, and it has 'broken' my top tension unit. i.e. I can no longer set it at all, and when sewing the thread is all loopy.

How do I service the top tension unit, as I cannot get to a service agent as I am on a yacht. Thanks for any advice

If the upper tension unit is in fact broken, you will need to take it for service or find a replacement part.

This may be a shot--remove the upper thread, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot, rethread from the beginning. Re-try your machine.

My pfaff 1475 CD thread is loopy on bottom and breaks on top.

Look very closely at your sample stitching and determine which thread (top or bobbin) is looping and which is breaking. That will narrow down where the problem exists.

A top thread that loops and makes thread "barfs" under the fabric is generally an upper thread tension problem.
Try: Remove the top thread. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Set the upper tension to the midway point (probably will need to tweak this tension depending on your machine).

My Pfaff 2124 isn't sewing right. The bobbin is making the correct stitches but the top thread is not. The top thread is just a straight line that can be pulled out with my hand! What should I do? What...

Your tension is wrong. Adjust the needle tension by turning your dial to a lower number. Try just a slight turn and try it out on a scrap of fabric. Keep doing this until it is right on both sides of the fabric. You may need to adjust this tension for different thicknesses of fabrics from time to time.

Pfaff varimatic 6091 What type of walking foot can i purchase for this model and are they very expensive ?

You could probably get away with a generic walking foot. They are available in the fabric store for a little under $20. Once you use one, you will wonder how you got by without it before!! I've attached a sample of a product that would work for you. Just be sure to NOT get the "slant" walking foot. That is for the Singer machine, and they have a different setup. Enjoy!!

Model 6091. I can't get the presser foot to go completely down and rest on the fabric. Can you help?

This is a comon problem with the pfaff 7570. The spring that applys the presser to the foot is all gumed up and needs to be removed cleaned and lubricated. I dont know if you want to try this yourself. You will need to remove the top and side covers and upper tension unit. Can be tricky. A pfaff repair shop should charge around $30. I will go over the steps if you want, let me know. But like i said i can be tricky.

Pfaff varimatic 6091 sew a rag quilt with jean and flannel,I can't get my tension right it seems to be funny on the bottom stitch, where shoulf the top tension be set at 4 1/2 ,when do I adjust the bobbin...

Hi! The bobbin tension rarely needs to be adjusted. First, make sure you're using the appropriate size needle and thread for your fabric (I'd probably use either a 'denim' needle or a universal size 14) and also that the upper thread and bobbin are threaded absolutely correctly. These can throw off the tension! Also, take the time to clean out the bobbin area. That can throw your stitch off also.

If the stitch on the bottom is loose, so that you see the top threads, then the top tension is too loose. If the top stitch is too loose and you see the bobbin threads on top, then the top tension is too tight.

It helps to thread the machine with different color thread on top and in the bobbin, and then stitch an inch or so on the same type of fabric as you're using in your quilt. Check the stitch. If you need to adjust the top tension, make sure the pressure foot is down! Adjust a little, stitch a few inches, and check again. Repeat until you don't see any (or very little) bobbin thread on the top or top thread on the bottom.

If you go through all these steps, and the bobbin thread is still loose (and you've tightened up the top tension), then there is a tiny little screw on the side of the bobbin case that you can use to adjust the bobbin tension. Turn the screw just a little bit (less than a quarter turn), stitch, check, etc. Once the bobbin tension is set, you shouldn't ever have to change it.

Let me know if this helps, ok?

Happy sewing!

Make sure your tension is set on 5 and you don't have dirt stuck in your tension unit.

Machine stops sewing when I hit a thickness

it may be that your motor belt needs tighening or the belt may be damaged - you can check belt and adjust tension yourself once side cover is removed.

if you are sewing thick seams and the needle is resting on the seam as you begin to sew you may have to help the machine to get started. if the fabric is not thick it must be belt tension.
