Question about HP LaserJet 4600dn Color Printer
We have had an HP LaserJet 4600dtn for years. We just moved it from one business to another (from the main office with a server that someone else completely set up and installed the printer to a plain old office with 2 computers). I have plugged the printer into the router (Cat5 cable) and the computer cannot find it. I have restored factory settings on the printer and still cannot find it. Computer O/S is Vista and I'm not sure if that's part of the problem or what or if I need to set something else up through the router, permissions, IP address or something. I'm totally lost and cannot seem to find anyone else anywhere on the internet with the same problem or an answer to this problem. Please help!!
You will need to find or set an ip address for the printer. if you are lucky the printer will be set to dhcp and will have an address, if not you will need to manually set an address. After that you will need to configure the pc's with "LPR" ports that will talk directly to the printer.
Where are you located?

The plain old office with plain old XP on the computers? I hope you held on to one computer with XP. Vista is still in it's ruff stage...
I remember that there is a SEARCH in the START button ! Look for Computer or People , a COMPUTER ON THE NETWORK, A popup will have a text box in it leave it blank, Press search. Anything connected to your router should appear in the popup to the right it is part of your INTRANET defined as your internal network.
Sometimes you need to set the nework items DHCP so it will automatically set the IP addresses and the submask...
EG IP... 18.104.22.168
Submask 255.255.255.0 this one has to be the same on all the devices if mot then they will be in a different relm and can not be seen or it can not see the other devices.
