I have a scotts easy spreader what is the setting for weed and feed 28-0-3

It depends on the size of the granules. I've seen some that are small and some that are large. Setting to get the rate right depends on that. If you could provide the brand of weed and feed, we might be able to look it up.

Should I cut my grass before applying Scott weed and feed

If you have a jungle then yes, but if it's just a week or so's growth then no.
If you do choose to cut then leave the grass for about a week before applying the treatment.
If you don't get rain for four days after the application, water the lawn or the chemical could scorch the grass.

I have lost my instructions for my hand held spreader. The numbers on the side that control the outlet of whatever is in the spreader--do these indicate the number of pounds per 100 sq. ft?

Below is a list of spreader settings. You may want to call Scotts at 800-543-8873 and verify the product you are using is able to be used in a hand held spreader.
  • For fine grass seed (blue, rye, fescue) use setting 1
  • For coarser seed (tall fescue) use setting 2
  • For light fertilizer (Scotts fertilizers at a regular rate) use setting 3
  • For heavy fertilizer (Scotts fertilizers at a heavy setting) use setting 4
  • For pelletized fertilizer and ice melt products use setting 5

The recommended settings for your type of spreader should be listed on the package of the bag of weed and feed you have. There should be a rate chart on the bag. If not, put the setting on your unit on the middle setting, that way, you are not using too little and not using too much.

Scott's no longer makes this handy helper. Do this, get some white sand and mix it with the grass seed. It will mark your lawn and help you see where you spread the seed or fertilizer. Joe
