SOURCE: sata & ide darddrives

Hi, All dual drive capable boards read the SATA first, just make sure both SATA & IDE are enabled in the BIOS, load your O/S as normal this will load on the 1st SATA and the others will be auto detected as drives D and E, the IDDE will be E by default. Regards mistyman

SOURCE: How do I remove the Hard drive in a Toshiba L40-17M laptop

I have a Toshiba Satellite and it's IDE. The hard drive is behind a panel in the back and once you take the panel off it should just unplug. There should be a pull tab on it.

How to reinstall windows XP

Your model Toshiba notebook has a SATA hard drive.
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive. http://www.fixya.com/support/r4335035-installing_windows_xp_sata_hard_drive

What ide

What is ide? IDE is a interface that is used by hard drives and cd/dvd drives. IDE will have little metal pins or prongs that stick out for the cable from the computer's motherboard to connect to.

SATA is the latest technology for the interface of hard drives and cd/dvd drives. Sata does not have the metal pins.

I need to attached my hard drive of My toshiba laptop 2455-S305 to an external IDE enclosure so I can download the files from it to another computer. The one I bought, External IDE Enclosure High speed...

OK it seems as though you have an IDE - USB dongle. What you need is a SATA - USB dongle. It appears that the drive you have is SATA, you will know this as there is only a small connector for tha Data and Power Plug. The IDE is a wide multi pinned socket with a large 4 pin Power Connector.
I have included a link to Ebay so you can see what you need. as in the USB to SATA dongle. http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=usb+-+sata&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_dmpt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal&_odkw=usb+-+memory+card&_osacat=0
You need to get one such as this to connect to your drive.

Slow Hard drive

That model is only IDE capable and has no SATA ports on the motherboard. You should get a faster IDE harddrive OR an external USB harddrive .

There are 2 types of connections, IDE ( Top pic. The ribbon) and SATA (Bottom pic. Red Cable). If your running IDE, you could get a new motherboard (SATA supported), or just bring back your hard drive exchanging it for a IDE.
