An EF code is indicative of an Evaporator Fan Circuit Failure. Can it be stopped by ice or frost? Absolutely. Press the freezer up button and the freezer down button simultaneously for 6-8 seconds and you will enter a test mode. Every time you press the fresh food button after entering the test you will advance to the next test. They are not in numerical order. Go to test 26 (The defrost circuit test) and it will show CL for closed or OP for open. If it shows OP you have a defrost issue. If CL there is no defrost problem. Next go to test 15 - keeping in mind they ( the tests are Not in numerical order). When you get to 15 press the main power on/off button. The 1st time you press it the display will show LO and the fan should be on low speed. The next time you press the power button it will show HI, and the fan should be on high. It is a twelve vdc fan motor wire colors red, yellow, brown, and blue. They originate at the j6a and j4a connectors. If the fan does not come on in the test the check will be made at the control. There should always be 12vdc between brown and red, and there should be 9 - 12 vdc between brown and yellow in the test. The blue wire is a tach wire and feeds info back to the lower control which is located behind the kick plate underneath the unit. EX factory service 22 years currently an instructor. A cf error code means there is a communication failure between the lower control and the user interface( control on the door). Communication is carried back and forth on a white wire that originates at the j9a connector on the lower control. It has three wires, one red, one black and one white wire. This wire goes from the j9a through the left door hinge and down to the user interface. If the wire integrity is intact, replace the lower control and the user interface.

Thank you for your post, Carol!
I understand that your Frigidaire refrigerator is displaying an error code of "5Y CE". However it appears that "5Y CE" is an invalid error code. I have noticed the code of "SY CE" and that means there is a communication error at power up. I would recommend performing a reset on your refrigerator and you can do that by unplugging the power cord for at least ten minutes. If that does not correct your issue it could be possible that there is an issue with your main control board, wiring harness, or user interface board. I would then suggest having a professional technician out to perform a proper diagnosis and repair. This will help you avoid any unnecessary part purchases. Hopefully this is helpful. -Matt

Hey friend, thank you for your inquiry!
Based off the information you have provided your Frigidaire refrigerator is displaying "5Y CE". I have researched that code and believe it is an error code of "SY CE" which means a communication error after power up. I would recommend resetting your refrigerator and you can do that by disconnecting power from your appliance for ten minutes.
If that does not help correct the issue it could be a faulty main control board or user interface board. I would consult with a technician to come out and provide an accurate diagnosis. I hope this information is helpful. -Matt
