Hmm thats a lil odd in windows or mac you may need to reformat the drive (warning any data will be deleted forever when doing this) right click on the drive and click format and you will see the format box appear where it says quick format make sure the check box is clear (this will perform a low level format on the drive again any data on the drive will be forever lost) click ok or start and the drive will begin to format and reset the size of the drive if not let me know ok?

Wd 1 tb - shows no disc space left, but the files on it don't take up much space.

Depending on the Operating System you are using (i.e. Windows or Mac OSX etc.), they deal with deleting files in different ways. In the case of an Apple Mac, it doesn't actually delete you files, but instead moves them to the recycle bin which is located ON your external hard drive. This means that in order to make the space available, you have to empty your recycle bin on your desktop whilst the hard drive is plugged in and it will empty the folder for you. Or look for a hidden folder on the root of your Hard Drive called Recycle and delete it (it will be recreated by your system when your system needs it).

Alternatively, 1TB is a large drive meaning that it is possible that your file structure has become "fragmented". Don't worry yourself with the specifics, but if you right-click on the drive and access the Properties, choose the Tools tab and use the Defragment tool. Also it might be worth using the Check Disk For Errors option, although Defragment is more relevant in this case.

If you run through these basic troubleshooting steps listed above I hope you will gain access to your cleared space.

Hi t rope
It sounds like your hard drive may be faulty, you can try another usb lead to see if this is the problem, otherwise the drive or enclosure may be faulty. Hope this helps.

My wdexternal hard drive 500gb flickers on and off but wont stay on and i cant access my stored information

Some part of the drive has "died".

If it still has a valid WARRANTY, exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

If the warranty has expired, then open the case, remove the disk-drive, buy a new "compatible" disk-drive, connect it, and thus "revive" your external storage device.

External Hard Drive not Accessible after Windows Vista Update

Assuming that the external hdd is physically working fine, everything is pointing to a damaged boot sector.

You can get back most (if not all) your data stored in your external drive with the help of an application called: Pc Inspector File recovery.
Its a freeware.
Here is the link: http://pcinspector.de/Sites/file_recovery/download.htm?language=1#

Simply install it on your C:\ drive, and follow the prompts.

1tb WD external hardrive not mounting, can't access my info ?

First of all, restoring a hard drive rarely affects data stored on it. I usually just adjusts the supporting software that allows it to run properly. Definately check the manual prior to restoring it, though. Formatting it will absolutely erase everything (unless your the FBI). I'm about 99% sure that restoring it will leave your stored data completely unaffected.
You're better off performing the work using the newest OS available. BTW, your BF can plug into the internet and get upgraded to 10.4.11 as well for free and it doesn't take long.
