Tv picture ok but alot of times if channel is hd it will break up and shows a black screen with weak or no signal

This could be an issue of not enough signal from your HDMI cable, make sure that cable is ok, if possible hook another TV up and see if it works ok
Another issue is a bad main or mother board, the one the HDMI plugs into, there is an IC on that board that does nothing but process the high def signal, that isn't a part you can change yourself you would need a replacement board.

Is it possible to turn a malfunctioning 55" tv into a monitor by bypassing the motherboard?

Check and see if you have the following:
HDMI input on the back of your TV.
The ability to switch from standard input to HDMI.

If both are true, you can plug a HDMI cable into your TV, change the setting to HDMI (port # if you have more than 1) and you will bypass the Channel selector part of the mother board.

Give it a try and let us know.

Bad hdmi port

If you have a bad HDMI port you have to abandon it because it is part of the motherboard and in most TV's cannot be replaced on site by a technician. The mother board has to be shipped back to the factory or a very good service center for HDMI replacement. Ask for a quote before you decide to get it fixed.
