SOURCE: Magic Chief compact fridge motor gets hot but does not cool

Look In the rear bottom where the wires plug into the compressor. There will be a plastic cover plate over the connecting wires. Remove it. Unplug the white wire. note the white wire was plugged into a small black box (3/4"x3/4") pull the black box out. It is connected by 2 prongs. If you open this up you will find a small metal disk that looks like a watch battery. pop it out and clean the contacts. put it all back together and it should work fine. I believe it is the thermostat and many times gets bad contacts and can even crack over time. The compressor will "click" on but the bad thermostat tells it "no"

If the compressor is being used for extended times without resting or getting the product cooled, could be the problem. On small refrigerators the inside is sized for the work load. The condenser coil on back or in some cases under the outside skin of the refrigerator is designed to cool the area inside by releasing the heat from inside.. You may need to modify your cooler to handle such loads with more cooling capacity and condenser with fan to help bring the product temps down more efficiently. Let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

SOURCE: Plugged in refrigerator and it's getting really hot on side

I don't think fire is any issue. The unit cools itself by dissipating it's heat on its outside walls. For the moment, the outside is hotter than normal because the inside is also hotter than normal. Both will normalize after a while.

SOURCE: Mini Fridge not working MCBR445

Compressor is in a locked up/ no start condition. the overload cools enough to reset and tries to start it again and kicks out on amp draw, then the whole cycle starts over again.

Why is there an occasional rattling sound from the rear?

Good afternoon Bob.

Wine coolers have a lot in common with mini-refrigerators. The cooling for the wine, to proper 'cellar' temperatures is done gently (one hopes) with circulating cool air that should keep the temperature stable, and the dust to a minimum.

The fan you hear is most likely one keeping the refrigerant compressor cooled off. Depending on how your unit is packaged, what you'll likely want to do is
  1. Unplug the unit. No pokey pokey into the guts of things plugged into the wall. Always err on the side of safe. Aside from shock rick, the small fans in fridges can actually cut fingers up pretty good if you let em.
  2. Look to the rear lower section of the unit and find the compressor(s) and associated fans and perhaps cooling coils. Much like with regular fridges, use a brush or a vacuum attachment to clear any dust bunnies or other debris off of the coils, compressors, and fans.
  3. Examine the fans. See if anything may have been sucked up into the blades or spindle - giant cobwebs, bits of thread of carpet fiber. See if the blade will spin freely, and whether it feels loose. If it won't move, or is obstructed, try to clear it and clean off any debris or fiber. If it will not move, the fan may have failed. You don't want to run a fridge this way, as the next thing to go after the cooling fan for the compressor is the compressor. At which point most honest techs will say 'buy a new fridge, I can't replace it for less than the fridge will cost you.
  4. You can also see if there is anything else obviously loose near the compressor or fan. There's a significant power surge needed to start the compressor, and the initial slow cycling may be making things shudder.
Hoping this is useful. Good Luck!

What could be the problem with my Magic Chef mini fridge model number MCBR465S. It comes on when I plug it in but not cool at all, and the compressor hot, could I trouble shoot and how, freon? Thx

If the compressor is actually running and there is no refrigeration, I would suggest it has a gas leak and that's why it isn't cooling. Depending on what type of refrigerant is in it, it may not be worth repairing as its only a small bar fridge? Check the rating plate to see if its R12 (Older fridges) or R134A . If the unit is less than 5 years old, it may be operating on R32 or R600 (Butane refrigerant gases) If its only a couple of years old, it may still be under Manufacturer warranty. Most fridges carry a 2 year warranty on everything and up to 5 years parts warranty on what is known as the "Sealed system"

My frigidaire mini fridge won't cool. Ice builds up on one of the wires on back and the cooling unit (I think) gets very hot

It sounds like it could be a restricted Capillary tube, which would require a sealed system repair by a professional repair person. A new mini fridge might be the way to go.

Neff fridge/freezer has stopped cooling

pull the unit from the wall, remove the bottom back panel , see if the small fan is working ,if the fan is , there's probally alot of dust back there, unplug the fridg. and vacuum the area real good, use a flash light to make sure you get it all, if the fan is not working and the compressor is running the fan is the problem ,the fan keeps the compressor and coils cool so the freon can cool down so the unit works like it should,if the freon is hot ,the air the fridg.will be blowing will be hot. this should fix your problem, and YES its worth fixing.alittle p.m.saves alot of $$$$$$$$$

Hi,

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...

Check out these tips that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

The mini fridge does not cool. This fridge doesnt use any fans so nothing to check there. The compressor seems to be awfully hot (although I dont know if thats normal) you wont born your hand but it would...

Hi, it's possible, your motor overlay relay has switch off motor, if your days are hot, or if room temp get high, that could happened, unplug ref. let motor cool down for about an hour, if compressor is running, but not cooling, it's possible you got a freon leak, normally ref have a condensate line, that passes through, front of door, that usually get rusted and leak, normally we by-pass it, now if there's a leak, you will have to repair leak first, you will have to change filter drier, vacuum and recharge. no you won't be able to buy freon and tap it up, same princple like vehicle a/c, but, different application, could also be an electrical problem, check motor overload, situated on compressor terminal, remove compressor terminal cover, and you will see overload relay, it's round, has one wire connected to compressor terminal and another connected to wiring harness. also, you can check compressor for short circuit, remove 3 wires from compressor terminal, place one tester lead on copper tubing coming from compressor and next tester lead, place on compressor terminal one by one, if you hear a beep (continuity) from any one of those terminals, compressor windings are faulty, replace compressor, or could just be hot summer months, let it cool down, but remember, remove plug from receptacle. or you are victim of low voltage, low voltages are more frequent in summer months, it could damage compressor winding, or compressor overload relay, let it cool down, and retry it. let me know what happened, before you attempt any repairs. and i can tell you what exactly what the problem are. good luck.

MIni fridge stopped working/cool.

I got mine in 2005. It stopped working 4 or 5 weeks ago. It made a clicking noise and the compressor was very hot. Compressor is under warranty but appliance repair shop wanted $125 to install it and another $75 to charge it with freon. I saw a posting somewhere else that said it was a relay switch. I ordered one from RepairClinic.com for $24.00 incl. shipping, put it in and it's working now. There's a black plastic housing on the left side of the compressor. Just unscrew that, pop the cover off (that was a little tricky) and plug in the new part. Maybe I'll get another 3 years out of it.
