Tomato plants have had no flowers.Mainly Grosse Lisse. Grown in plant bed with 8 hours sun per day. Fertilised dug in with pot ash before planting.Just under a metre tall with good green foliage

Interesting. I have three tomato plants this year which bore no fruit. One was a $20 grafted tomato and was huge, but no flowers.

A horticulturalist told me he though I had a virus. I will be sterilizing the soil with Jeyes Fluid twice, now and about a month before planting.

Easter Flower Care

When Christmas arrives, shops and homes are filled with Easter flowers, or poinsettias, brightening the spaces with their red and green Christmas colors. This plant has become one of the most representative icons of our parties and it is rare the home that does not have one for those dates. Its success is due to its bracts or red leaves in the form of a star, which after the months become green and then redden again (there is also cream, white or pink). However, although we buy them precious, over time, as they pass the holidays, they begin to lose their flowers, wither and after a month or two they die. And is that the Christmas flower is a very strong plant, but if we do not take into account the basic care you need, we will not be able to keep it always beautiful and flowery.

Choose a suitable plant

When you go to buy an Easter flower, make sure that the specimen has a thick base and that there are healthy green leaves under the colored leaves that form the star. If you see that there are yellow leaves or damage to the leaves and/or shoots means that the plant is not well cared for.
Be wary of plants whose soil is soaked or very dry, as it may be a sign that they are not regularly watering and this may have irreversibly damaged the roots.
Do not buy plants that are found outdoors. The reason they are sold wrapped is that this plant suffers a lot of the blows produced by the low temperatures and in a few days it can lose its leaves almost completely. Make sure it is well guarded on your way home.

Care of the Easter flower at home

When you get home you must remove the wrapper from the plant to aerate it.
Place it near a window where it receives good light and prevents it is very close to sources of heat such as radiators or air conditioners, as they dry the environment a lot and can damage the plant.
Irrigation should be done directly in the pot, never wet the bracts and leaves, and moderately, as much water can rot the plant.
When winter passes you can prune it and even plant it in a garden. When spring arrives it will begin to sprout and grow and will bloom again for Christmas.

Care of the Easter flower in the garden

If you're going to decorate your garden with poinsettias, keep in mind how sensitive they are to low temperatures. Look for the warmest areas for your location and those that may be protected by a wall both artificial and natural.

I planted 3 azaleas last summer - when do they produce flowers - I see no buds

I know little about plants and gardening but I do sometimes listen to the BBC radio 4 programme "Gardener's Question Time".

Many times people ask similar questions about when will various plants flower or why haven't they flowered.
The answer from the experts is always the same. If the plants are too well cared for they are likely to put their energy into growth and might never flower.
Plants, apparently, only flower for survival. Before a plant will flower it must fear for it's life, it has to think it is going to die or maybe think it might die.

Gardeners who have lots of lovely flowers have them because they know how to deprive plants and cause them worry.

Now, Marilynn, you know as much about plants as me.

What are the easy and best ways to take care of flower garden?

1. Keep the water up to them so they do not dry out completely but do not over water. Many species of flowers will die quickly if allowed to dry out, especially in hot summers. Get yourself a good book covering the species of plants you have to improve you knowledge in caring for the plants.

2. Fertilise with a suitable slow release fertiliser in spring and summer.

3. Mulch the beds with a suitable product to retard weeds and retain soil moisture.

4. If the flowers are planted in a heavy soil dig a little river sand into the soil where possible in existing beds.

5. Don't use garden chemicals to ward off pests. If you have pest susceptible flower species that will require chemical spraying and the like, remove them and replace them with hardier more resilient species.

When installing security lights under the eaves of my house, what direction should I point them in?

When installing security lights under the eaves of your home, point them in a downward direction from the eaves and towards the corner of your house. This will allow for your lighting to cover both sides of your home. If you point security lighting away from your home, it leaves an unlit area, making it vulnerable to intruders.
