WinDVD 8 was preinstalled on my laptop Acer with Vista and then it was accidentally uninstalled. I also have Windows Media and the CD's I played work fine but not DVD's. I reinstalled WinDVD and put in a movie. Media played it but no volume was coming out and meanwhile WinDVD was giving me error code saying I was missing a codec. I downloaded a codec hopefully it will work but now WinDVD won't work and keeps telling me that it can't open the program.

Windows XP doesn't come with the proper codecs to play DVD movies by default. You either need to buy a program with the codecs, or pay Microsoft for them. What I've found works best is to download the trial of WinDVD. It installs the needed codecs and you don't even need to use the program. So after you install it just use whatever program you originally wanted to use and you should be set.
(The older versions od WinDVD could be uninstalled while leaving the codecs behind, but the new version seems to remove them after uninstalling, so you'll want to leave it on the computer)
you haven't phsically uninstalled the cam, its built in, as it would have automatically installed again at the next startup, the same thing happens to a lot of ACER notebooks, follow these instruction at the below link

There may have been a Windows update that corruptdated one of your Windows Media Player files. Check for spyware or a virus. WMP is usually an avenue for thay sort of thing. Check for updats to all software involved. You may also consider doing a firmware update if they have one.
Good Luck,
