Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a Model 106-74262400 refrigerator. About five days ago, I heard it make a pop sound followed by a clicking sound over the next four days. It finally stopped cooling in the refrigerator part, but remains cool (not freezing) in the freezer. What could be wrong with it?

I would start with the basics. the pop might have been the defroster heater and the clicking is the defrost timer kicking in. if the heater is not working the evaporator will freeze solid and the air can't flow through and so you don't get any cooling.

Our refrigerator door fell off, very unexpectedly. Never knew this could occur Why and how can we prevent it from happening again?

Hello, Ok first thing would be to click this link which is the schematic for the refrigerator door http://c.searspartsdirect.com/lis_png/PLDM/M0310568-00001.png
if you look at the schematic shown part number 7 would be the upper hnge for the refrigerator door and 24 would be the lower hinge as well as 24 which are the screws that hold the hinge in place. Many times refrigerator door hinges tend to bend over time due to the amount of weight put on a door. In time with heavy loads this tends to bend the hinges or distort them mainly causing uneven sealing and in worser cases such as yours where most likely part of the hinge has broken, a door to fall off the unit. This can also happen due to screws that usually hold the hinge in place either upper or lower not being secured, rounded out screw holes, or missing screws. You basicly need to remove the hinges and the screws that normally hold the door on and inspect the hinges and the hinges securing screws for deformities or damage. If you are unable to locate an issue with either hinge and the screws then turn the door upside down and look at the hole the hinge goes into and assure that the hole is not rounded out or snapped in this area due to someone leaning down on the door itself. If you have any further questions or need any further diagrams as well message me back. I await your reply
Thank you,
Rick

It sounds as if you have a defective compressor start relay.  It is located on the side of the compressor, usually contained within a black plastic housing (box).  If ordered, it will most likely come with an overload proctector.  Change both parts.

Not Cooling and has burning smell

If you are looking for help, one must explain the problem in detail, described properly, for one one the internet to review. For myself, a would require more details of your refrig, to properly explain a resolution. Otherwise a general answer is not worth much. If you have the fully electronic temperature controlled unit, then the components can be easily chedked in 5 minutes, by the on-board service diagnostic computer. One needs to know the general operating knowledge fo the refrig, which is naturally available, since you operated it for some years. Anyway, a layman can check it out by doing what is natural. Since the refrig defrosted, it has shut down. Four years is too short for genral compressor defects. Put the power plug in and check for operating sounds. Just a few seconds. You mentioned smell (outside or inside), ket a paper tube, like a paper towel center, and sniff the evaporator motor, then the condenser motor. I will recheck later, and see if you want to continue, this troubleshooting. Regards fmauka
