You should have a screen resulation menu and a vertical size (high) control also on the r/c[remote control] menu.
If not you could have a vertivcal (electrical) problem. Let a technician take a peek at it.

Disconnect the power supply for few minutes, say 30 minutes and then ON the TV. If the problem still persists, this would confirm a hardware failure and needs repair. This would need you to open the unit and repair it. If you have electronics repair experience, could read schematics, would be able to keep precautions, revert and i would tell you few pointers. You would also need to have the service manual of the TV. Moreover, you need to be ready with multimeter and soldering iron. Kindly answer below questions as well so that i could help you to repair it :-
1. Make and model of the TV?
2. How old the unit is?
3. Does the 3 lines remain stationery or not?
4. Do you have sound?
Let me know,so that we could proceed.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Most Emerson remote controls have a "FORMAT" button. Each button press cycles through TV Screen aspect ratio choices, such as Normal, Movie Expand, Wide, Zoom, etc. Pick one that fills your screen. You will probably have to change this setting again, depending on the signal source or channel selected.
The button cycles through the choices in a loop, so you can always get back to Normal.
