SOURCE: snapper rear engine riding mower clutch

It is time to replace the driven wheel. When you flip the mower up on the back end (after closing the vent on the top of the fuel cap), the driven wheel is the disc that has rubber on the outer edge that rides on the silvery disc that comes off the end of the motor. The last time I bought one was about 7 years ago, at which time it cost me about $7.85. I would expect it to be around $11-12 these days.

SOURCE: snapper mower electric start problem

On most mowers, that red wire will connect to the battery. that could be your problem.
you didn't say if it is a rider or not, or how old it is.
Touch the wire to positive post on the battery, with the key off, remove quickly if it sparks.
if no spark, hold it to the battery while turning the key.
if the engine tries to start, connect it permanently.

SOURCE: Snapper Hi-Vac riding mower that won't start with starter

You may need a 300cca battery, an ignition switch or a solenoid to get things going again. I also would check to make sure the starter gear has not locked in the flywheel teeth; it will burn up the starter. You should be able to go to the snapper website and put your model of mower in and find the parts and diagrams you need.
Good Day.

SOURCE: how to remove the pto clutch on a snapper model # LT180H48DBV2

You can use an impact wrench, but more than likely the bolt is unscrewed and you will need to get a set of pulley pullers to pull the clutch.

first check the friction wheel that drives the rear axle then look at the cable adjustment you may need to move the small rings around the pedal if all that looks good loosen the pulley assem away from the engine closer to the axle

The blade on my snapper riding mower disengages but will engage by resetting. it then disengages again

My experience has been the clutch is bad. There is a "clearance gap" between the clutch pads so when it energizes a magnet is charged drawing the two together. When the clearance exceeds a certain amount, the clutch either will engage and almost immediately stop or not engage at all. Costly, too.

I have an LT series Snapper rider with 20 hp and 44" cut. The transmission seems to be slipping. I have not checked the oil. Replacing the belt looks like a big job.

Not as some John Deere mowers I worked on lately.

I am assuming your is the Hydro version with electric pto. First set the parking brake as this remove tension on the belt.

You will need to remove the pto clutch and attention to the keys are positioned as they are one way keys. When reinstalling the PTO clutch it torqued to 55 ft lbs. To do this you need to remove the engine shroud so can block the flywheel movement.

The rest of the belt removal and replacement is fairly straight forward.

Only after i got stuck in mud did blades on snapper lt 200 42 rider so working belts are tight must be sensor insert seat went out or went bad

Blades would not turn after I got stuck in mud. Electric clutch?

  • Turn the engine off and remove the key.
  • Check for physical damage; anything look bent?
  • Spin the pulley on the bottom of the clutch. Does it spin freely?
  • There could be mud or grit stuck in the clutch.
  • There is a drive key between the clutch and the shaft. Has this key been sheared? It's possible the clutch was burnt out during the mud incidence.
PTO Clutch will not engage or stay engaged.
There is a very fine discussion on evaluating electric clutches at this site:
http://www.messicks.com/Articles/FixingElectricClutch.aspx

My JD tech manual, which covers the entire LA 100 series, agrees with the electrical specifications. It states that the Electric PTO Clutch should show the following:
  • Resistance 3.7 ohms
  • Current Draw 3.25 amps.
  • It does not give the air gap.
It does include a note to check the PTO Clutch Key for damage or if missing. So there is a drive key between the PTO Clutch and the shaft. Additionally, it recommends checking the tightness of the cap screw. That's the screw or bolt that holds the clutch on the shaft.
  • Cap Screw torque 55 lb-ft (75 N.m).

How do i remove a electric clutch brake for the pto switch on a snapper riding mower?

You can jump the wires to the switch to see if is the switch itself. You will have a ground, a 12 v supply and a wire to the option. If you power up the device with a jumper wire, don't forget device needs ground too, and the device engages, you will just need to order the switch, or if you are a bit inventive, create one, not recommend

My snapper mower only has two forward gears and no reverse. the clutch is worn. Could replacing the clutch fix the problem or is there something else going on with the transmission?

Typically if your clutch is worn, you would experience some slippage in all gears. If your forward gears work, but reverse does not, you should be looking at a potentially more serious problem.
