Nothing happens when I right click the screen, i can only open things by going to task mgr. My warranty is expired already =(

Hi, yea I tried to do a system restore but it won't let me because when I get to the part where I choose the date the "next" button won't work. What do u mean by loading windows xp ? Is that the same thing as F10 or system recovery? If I use that method would I lose all my files?

  • fiona983 Jul 28, 2009

Yeah I have the disc to reinstall windows xp. I think my files will be deleted once I do that, it says it on the disc also. Do you know how I could transfer all my pictures, music, and documents over to my D drive? I'm not sure if I could put my files there D drive says "Recovery", if I do put it there, which folder do I put them in?

  • fiona983 Jul 30, 2009

Have you tried system restore? what about loading windows xp back on , your old programs will still be there. start with the simple things first before reformatting.

reinstall winxp. do you have the disk? your files will still be there. unless some major meltdown.

  • docbronk Jul 30, 2009

all that means is when you reinstall windows it replaces all your (System Files). Unless you reformat,if you reformat you lose everthing. But when you reinstall xp all of your updates to xp from the microsoft website will have to be re-downloaded. Do you have a CD or DVD writer? If so you can backup all your doc, pics, whatever on disk. If not I've never had any problems reinstalling xp and keeping everything in MY DOC's. But i did have to update for hours sometime on MS website. Let me know how it comes out!

  • docbronk Jul 30, 2009

I did'nt know you had a partion seperate "d" drive. righ click on it and see how much storage is left on it. If it has enough for all your pi'c,doc's then create a folder and copy all there. Right click in "D" drive, new folder, name it. go to your pictures right click , copy , paste in new folder on D drive. Makes since?

You should format your hard drive reinstall your Windows XP. If you have any important data on the drive use Hiren's Boot CD, it has Mini Windows XP, which loads off the CD and you can use it to copy data from your hard drive to another one.

Like i said, use Hiren's Boot CD and boot Mini Windows XP. It'll show your partitions and allow you to copy data between them.

On a clean Windows install the C: partition will be wiped. You can use that Mini Windows XP to copy data (such as My Documents, My Pictures and so on, found at C:\Documents and Settings\ to the D: partition, which will be left alone. There is little point in backing up the Program Files folder unless you have saved data/projects there, as any programs you had will have to be reinstalled due to the registry starting clean.

Don't do a recovery. In Windows XP Setup format the C: drive and install clean.

I assume you do have a *retail* XP disc, don't you? The recovery discs provided by your computer manufacturer aren't going to work. There are plenty of places to get a disc but they aren't all legal, so what you do is your own business.

Anyway. With the same Hiren's Boot CD i mentioned above start Acronis Disk Director (it's in the Partition Tools submenu), delete the C: partition, then re-create it. Select New Partition, NTFS, the maximum size available, and make sure it's set as Primary and Active. Hit the flag button and wait for Disk Director to do its job. Then install from a retail XP disc, you can find tutorials on how to do that on the net, and it's actually pretty easy. At this point you may try your manufacturer's restore discs again if you don't have retail XP, but if they fail at the same file then their CDs are broken and you should phone them to send you new ones.

After I boot up my computer all that brings is just a by screen saver with nothing else no icons or anything. Any help would be great.

For some reason it seems that explorer.exe isn't start. I would start by rebooting into safemode. After the bios boot screen, but before the windows loading screen repeatedly press F8 to bring up a menu. Try safe mode with networking first and run an anti-virus scanner. Usually virii and other malware tend to do this.

No start task bar in safe mode

It sounds like explorer.exe is being turned off. When you log in to Safe Mode hit Ctl+Alt+Del to bring the Task Manager and see if explorer.exe is running under Processes. If not, you can go to the Applications tab in Task Manager and click the New Task button and simply type in explorer.exe.
If this does not give you your Start Menu and Task Bar then you need to take your computer back to the repair service and have them fix it properly this time. Otherwise, you'll have to reinstall the operating system.

Xp cant start after welcome massage

Does it only show the desktop wallpaper and does not show the icons, taskbar, and start menu? well the explorer.exe is missing in the Processes which you can see in the Windows Task Manager
the following are the reasons for the problem
-Your PC is infected by a virus/malware or any harmful softwares which blocks the explorer.exe and disables it to run at startup
-Someone or something deleted your explorer.exe that is why it cannot be found
if this is not the cause of your problem i would be glad to know what is it.

hope it helps

Computer starts up windows to screensaver and goes no further. There is no start menu and cannot start it in safe mode.

by screen saver, Im assuming you mean the desktop wallpaper. (screen saver is the program that comes up and shows pictures moving around, or stars flying by, or pictures of pipes building some over-rebuilt plumbing in outer space). Whats going on is, your Windows shell (Explorer.exe) is not loading. that is almost ALWAYS caused by a virus. If you cannot load in safe mode, you may not be able to recover that system without a professional. If there is nothing of major importance on that drive, I suggest you gather your OS discs and your drivers and application discs and reformat and reload.Based on what you describe, your explorer cannot load and cannot process because of an infected file being loaded during startup.

My windows display only wallpaper

What happens when you press the windows key at the bottom left of your keyboard?

What happens when you move your mouse to the bottom of the screeen?

If nothing, can you get to the task manager? Press Cttl-Alt-Delete and choose task manager

Under process close explorer.exe
Then under the Applications tab click new task
type in explorer.exe

When booting into Windows press the F8 key and select restore to last known good configuration.

If that does not fix it... then you need to renboot using your Windows XP Installation CD and select repair system

If this has been of help to you please remember to vote kindly.

The wallpaper shows up but the icons don't show up. I cant get to any programs.

Does the start button work?  If not, run ctrl-alt-delete and go to processes.  Check for explorer.exe.  If it is not there, click on New Process and type EXACTLY explorer.exe and hit enter.

No icons, start menu, taskbar, explorer not working

backup your data and do a repair install - might take a while longer but at least you know it will clear any issues.

there are a number of things you can do to fix it but will most likely take a lot longer
