Compresser is shorted out across the fields. I want to comfirm the compresser size before I replace it.

Hi,
You need a niminal 3 ton compressor...the "36" in the model number gives you the 3 ton rating...36000 BTU @ 12000 BTU/ton = 3 ton...
So you need a 3 ton 240 volt single phase compressor...

Identify unit capacity.

The nameplate will provide a large amount of information, including the the manufacturer's name, model, serial, electrical requirements and the BTU rating or capacity that I believe you are looking for. Like the 120 volt sisters, the 240 volt unit should also have a nameplate. If unable to locate it on the chassis or frame of the unit in a similar location as the 120 volt, you'll have to look elsewhere. A www.google.com search on model number you provided (XHD183D) for this question indicates that it is a 17,900 BTU unit. If this is the correct model, case closed. If not, continue reading.

A good place to locate a nameplate if not plainly visible on the unit as it sits in the window would be on the chassis or frame behind the decorative grille. The grille is likely held in place by several clips and a screw or two. Shut off the AC and unplug it from the power source. Remove the filter as if to clean and carefully check for and remove screws and remove the grille.

I hope this helps!

Hitachi RAS-10C2M. What size of air conditioner

If the number you say is the model number, it appears to be a 10,000 BTU.Check on the sides of the unit, or inside where the air comes out, and it should give the numbers.It should say 5000 to1800 BTU, if it is a 110 volt unit. BTU is what you are looking for if you want the output, not HP.

Just put in a new ac unit and replaced a old one. old unit was 18000 btu and the new one is on 12,000 btu I used the same power outlet but the new ac unit starts up but then shuts down and seems like it is...

The 18,000 btu A/C is 230 volts, are you sure the 12,000 btu unit is 230 volts most are 120 volts.
Usually 12,000 btu is the biggest 120 volt A/C you can buy.

Heat load calculation

Here are a few ways to calculate your BTU's.
Get ready to use that algebra you thought you'd never use.
1 Ton = 12000 BTU's
400cubic feet per minute (CFM) = 1 Ton on standard ac units (300 is an absolute minnimum)
BTU's air heat = difference in temp. ( ∆T ) x 1.08 x CFM
∆T = BTU's / (1.08 x CFM)
i.e. 65F entering your unit and 93F air leaving on a 12000BTU unit.
∆T = 28
CFM = 400
28 x 1.08 x 400 = 12096BTU's
Another way...
Electric heat calculations.
BTU's = KW (killowatts) x 3413
Watts = Volts x Amps (single Phase) Most Homes))
Watts = Volts x Amps x Phase (this is for three phase units.)three wires and a ground))
120 volts 30 amps single phase (common)
120 x 30.0 x 1 = 3600 or 3.6KW 3.6 x 3413 = 12286BTU's
