SOURCE: Sewing machine straight stitch is not straight

Hey. It's full out possible that you have it on the right setting...but concider this - the switcher inside the sewing machine could be broken (ie. It's moving to different stitches - but not the one you have the outside set for)

It happened to me (pc o crap singer model)

SOURCE: How do I change the stiches?

You can do all of these stitches by using different combinations of your stitch selector, stitch width and stitch feed knobs, for instance, on the panel I can see on your machine:

http://www.jo-ann.com/joann/product/images/52659.jsp?CATID=cat3122&PRODID=prd11333

Stitches 1, 2 & 3 are straight stitches, centered, left and right. Really basic stuff, not different stitches at all. 4,5,6,7 & 8 are zig-zag stitches of different widths. 9 is the widest zig-zag (no. 8) on a finer stitch length, etc...

I think you should try and get an instruction manual for your machine. After a lengthy search of my usual manual sources, I've determined that that this may not be so easy. I think you should contact White on their 800 number and let them try and help you... 1-800-331-3164.

If you found this helpful, please vote generously as I receive nothing other than acknowledgement for my time.

SOURCE: Elna 7000 - Mislaid manual. How do i use program B (letters)?

Hi jennymalibu! The best thing for you to do would be to download a new manual (free) from the Elnal site. It's in a .pdf format, so you need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer (also free at Adobe.com) Below is a link to your manual. Just click on it, or if it doesn't work, copy and paste it into your browser window. Good Luck! Hope this helps! Hal http://elna.us/files/File/service_manuals/7000_service_manual.pdf

SOURCE: Elna machanical sewing machine

50 year old elnas made stitches by cams. look to see if the machine has a cam in it. you can see this by opening lid on top of machine. cams are black with red or white showing the pattern of the cam. could also have broken cam stack gear. That would require technician with elna experience

SOURCE: only does zig zag stitches, no straight stitches,

make sure the pattern selector is set for straight stitch first. If it is set correct then the machine may be "stuck" is zig zag mode. May need to be de greased and then re lubricated.

Can u do normal straight stiching with ovetlocker model 686 elna?

No. A serger is not made to do straight stitching. However, you can accomplish the look of straight stitching as long as it is on the edge of fabric. The serger trims fabric from the edge and encloses the raw edge with thread.

If you want straight stitching, you need a sewing machine. Go to a sewing machine repair shop and ask if they have an inexpensive old mechanical sewing machine...like an old Singer, White, Necchi, Kenmore--the old metal kind.

Elna 3210 raw-edge zig-zag stitch bunching

Zigzagging on the raw edge of a lightweight fabric will pull up, because the needle is swinging to the right side off the fabric, bet solution is to use the three step zigzag to overcast the raw edge, it looks like a zigzag mad of dots in the stitch icon. Dont know your model well, but its late model so should have this stitch.

When zig-zagging on raw edge stitches bunch

Use a different stitch, use the triple zig zag or serpentine stitch so he needle is going through the fabric three or four times as it swings left to right.ma plain zigzag, because thread is tensioned, will pull lightweight fabric up. Try another raw edge finish, such as french seams, pinking shears or overcasting stitch. Of course for professional looking seams an overlocker (serger) is the answer as it has blades that trim the fabric edge and neaten with 2, 3 or 4 thread seam, encasing the raw edge.

Raw edge zig zag stitch bunching underneath

When zig zagging over a raw edge, the tension on the thread will pull in the fabric, especially in lightweight cottons or even lighter organza. Its not the best edging method for very light weight fabrics. You can try using a smaller zig zag, loosening off the top tension a little bit. Or if your machine has it, use the triple zig zag or serpentine stitch, where the needle goes through the fabric three times to make up each zig stitch, this stitch is better for edging most fabrics and is my preferred stitch.

I have an Elna 3210 and my feed dog won't raise anymore. How do I fix this?

When you drop the feed dogs they drop instantly. When you raise them it takes 1-2 stitches for them to com back up. Move the switch on the back to the up position and sew a couple of stitches.

I've got an Elna 634 overlocker, and want to turn

Just trim the fabric to the desired hem length plus one inch, then overlock around this raw edge with thread close colour match to the fabric.

You then have the choice of either stitching around with a stretch stitch on your sewing machine, or hand sewing.

Being lycra shouldn't change how you hem them unless the trouser leg is extremely close fitting and the hem seam is going to be under tension.

My first choice would be using a twin needle in straight stitch from top side but this finish can pop/break if the hem is under tension. But perfect for most knit hems.

If you hand sew then you can turn up hem allowance and put a length of fusible hemming web inside the hem allowance and press it to hold. Then do a back stitch hand sew around to hold hem in place.

If you sew with the regular sewing machine, then use either the stretch stitch or a very small zig zag, and a ball point or stretch needle.

On ready to wear you would see a coverstitch hem but your overlocker doens't have this stitch.

If you want to do blind hemming you need to find the stitch on your machine that looks like 3 small zigzags, then one bigger one, or 3 straight stitches, then one zig zag to the side. This is the blind hemming stitch. You'll possibly also have a blind hemming foot to use, which helps with guiding the fabric fold into the machine and keeping it even.

As the previous poster said, blind hemming is a little difficult to explain. You'd be best served by visiting http://sewing.about.com/od/techniques/ss/machineblindsti.htm for photos and intructions, getting a copy of a manual for your machine (if it doesn't have this stitch, then you're going to need to find another way) or getting a ibrary book out.

Blind hemming works best when hemming straight edges of fabric such as a ruffle on a full skirt - if there is any curve in the seam, it gets much harder and the result won't look so good. In essence, you press the fabric hem up, then fold the hem edge back under so you have a "S' shape, then sew along the single layer with the folded edge sitting against the foot guide. Then when the machine takes the 4th wide stitch, the needle swings to the left and catches a small stitch into the upper folded layer, then back onto the hem. The trick is adjusting the stitch so that the wide stitch doesn't show much on the right side of the garment.
