Hi, A few questions first.
Have you recently changed any hardware in your PC?
Have you recently had any power outs or surges?
Have you at all changed any settings in your system setup?
What type of hard drive is it?
What operating system are you using?

Computer not recognising hard drive. I have even looked in disk management and it's not recognised there either. The hard drive is lighting up when connected so it is working.

There are several reasons why your hard disk can not be recognised by the computer

4> computer problem

PC not recognising Iomega Prestige 320gb usb portable hard drive. I've connected it all up, disconnected, reconnected, rebooted the computer, but the drive is just not recognised and does not show up in...

Does the drive show in Device Manager? Right click on 'My Computer' and select properties, the open device manager.. Navigate down to Disk Drives or Hard Drives, click on the plus sign and see if your drive is listed. If it is, then right click on the drive name and open properties for the drive. Click on the 'Volumes' tab and hit the 'Populate Button'. It may be the disk just needs initialising, then reformatting before you can use it. If it does need initializing, a wizard should appear to guide you through the process!
If this doesn't solve your problem, try using a different USB cable and/or USB ports on your computer, and ensure to unplug all other USB devices other than keyboard & mouse.

Computer does not recognise, device making ticking sound

the ticking sound is a sign that the hard disk has crashed.

I would advise that you get another hard disk. Your present hard disk is having a bad sector.

Even if you are able to fix the problem, sooner or later, it would still disturb again.

So why not just change it once and for all.

All the best.

My portable hard disk get recognised when inserted, power is ok, it is not seen in the list of hard disks, I have 150gb data. can anyone help me to fix the problem pls

If you use Windows XP: Right click on "My Computer", click Manage. Select Disk Management under Storage. If you can see your portable HD, does it have a drive letter assigned to it? If not, Right click on it at the top right panel, select "Change Drive Letter and Paths...". Then assign an unused letter that does not associated with any Network Drives.
