Clean the spaces between the copper segments on the armature of the motor where the brushes touch. Put new brushes in it too.

Air is leaking from regulator knob on my d55146 compressor. will a regulator rebuild kit fix it or do i need a hole new regulator?

Yes. A rebuild kit will include all seals and o-rings needed.
This project is best handled at a service center...Reason being that the rebuild requires making sure that all seal surfaces are a clean machine surface to properly reseat and seal..

Dewalt d55146 wont start

Not that I am aware of. The cord should go into a control box where the on off switch is. The motor wires come from that to the motor. I would check the switch box and more importantly the cover. The cover contains the plastic knob that turns the switch on and off. If the knob gets messed up it may not work correctly. The cover is available by itself. Here is a diagram with the part numbers.

The compressor motor is getting hot, I removed the cover and one of the brushes is shooting sparks when the motor is turned on, the brushes seem to have plenty of pad left and seem to be aligned properly...

If there were a problen with the field or the armature, both brushes would make fire(look at both sides of each brush for spark). Sparking is normal, however heavy blue fire would indicate problem. When one brush is making unusual sparks I would suspect that the spring applying pressure to the brush against the armature has failed. Look at both brush springs and see if there is a color difference or feel the pressure that the springs are exerting. They should be equal. You can push on the brush slightly with wood or plastic tool. To see if there is an improvement. Replace parts as needed. Test the motor with amp meter and compare to amp rating on plate to be sure that there is not a problem with motor. If amp draw is slighly high, check for tight bearing, leaking head gaskets/reed valves or leaking checkvalve at the tank. Good luck.

My regulator on my compressor keeps leaking from the top. When I turn on compressor it just keeps filling up in the regulator maxes out at 200psi and blows the safety valve. model D55146 type 2

Hello. W/D here.
Check the rating tag on the safety valve that is letting the pressure off of the tank. I'm pretty sure that it is less than the 200 psi that you are seeing.
What I believe is that the contacts in the pressure switch are either set too high, or the switch is bad. Check the rating for your switch, it's kick in (on) and kick out (off) pressures. If you have these values, you can set the switch yourself. Pump the pressure up to where you want it to kick out (off) and stop the compressor at that pressure by pulling the plug. Remove the contacts cover and adjust the spring until the contacts part, setting the contacts to the actual pressure. Drain the air down to below the kick in point. Replace the cap over the contacts, and turn the compressor back on. It should kick off at the pressure that you dialed in.
If the contacts will not set, or if there is too much carbon on the contacts, or if you note any burned wires or melted terminals, replace the switch. Minor carbon on the points can be removed with an emery board or fine sandpaper, and this should be regarded as a temporary fix.
Best regards, --W/D--
