Are you using genuine Brother color cartridges? If you are, then try different paper (20 pound laser printer paper or plain paper copier paper rather than inkjet paper,) Also, do not use recycled paper. If that does not work, you may need a new imaging (OPC belt) unit, or a new fuser assembly. Check your owners manual about when to replace the imaging unit or fuser. It is usually after 60, 000 prints have been run.

You probally had the imaging unit replaced. The image drum is part of the imaging unit. The problem you described is a common problem with this printer. The cause is that the developer blades in the imaging unit gets coated with toner, and that coating blocks the toner from getting onto the paper to make the image. It get less and less and it shows up as light printing.
It can be fixed by replacing the imaging unit or you can clean the blades yourself if you are handy. If you look at my tips section, I have a detail instructions with pictures showing you how to do it. Hope this helps.

The printer has a build up of toner on the drum/fuser, a maintenance cleaning done by certified technician of the printer would fix this problem.
