Re: won't print in black
Unplug your printer and reinstall the drivers. Your printer is sending data to your computer saying that you are still out of black ink. By rebooting and also re installing your drivers it will reset its self. Or you can pull your color ink and see if it reconizes the black with out it. There also may be a problem with your black shuttle depending how long you were with out black ink it could of dried the surface that helps extrude ink from the bottom of the ink cartriage. I have found never let a ink cartriage ever run completely dry before you buy a new one.. A little wastefull maybe but it can save you in the long run.

I would not advise you to refill a toner cartridge becausethe toner powder is very fine and you do not want to breath in this tonerpowder.
You may be able to print a few more pages by removing thetoner cartridge and shaking the toner cartridge in a horizontal position a fewtimes and then placing it back into the printer.
This will give you an opportunity to print a few more pages and giveyou time to purchase a new toner cartridge for your printer. A cheaperalternative is to purchase a re-manufactured toner cartridge for your modelprinter.
A re-manufactured printer cartridge also replaces worn partsas well as refilling with toner powder.
My Canon printer has TWO slots for black ink cartridges. I assumed one was extra and didn't replace it when I ran out. Text printed just fine with only one installed, but my photos were printing with purple instead of black. I looked into it, and the two cartridges are different: one holds dye-based ink, the other has pigment based. Photos must require both kinds. If your printer is the same as mine, use both!
Try reinstalling the printer, as it sounds like a driver problem. This shouldn't happen, but occasionally the drivers get corrupted. And refilled cartridges certainly don't help, and may continue to give trouble even when replaced with OEM ones. Have you tried turning the printer completely off - disconnecting the power lead, for a few minutes? That sometimes clears things.
The other week I had the black print head clog up, requiring daily nozzle deep cleaning [a normal 'ocassional' maintenance function]. Thought I needed a new Print head, so anything worth a try.
I loaded up an old black cartridge [I load all my own......always have] with Isopropyl Alcohol and ran deep clean on that cartridge a couple of times, then repeat printed [6 times] a page full of the number 8 in about half inch character size, to get the alcohol through the nozzles. then Deep cleaned again 3 times, to wash it through the print head.
I reloaded the normal ink filled cartridge and ran the '8' page again till I got good black output. It has now been working without problem, daily, for over a week. Clearly if it's a Magenta only problem, the cleaning as described above would be a bit different, as the magenta is one of 4 colour cartridges.
My printer does quite a lot of work, and was bought at least a couple of years ago, being used daily for alpha numeric and photo printing work. This was the first difficulty I experienced with it.
Hope the above might help.Ken
