SOURCE: MTD PRO RIDING MOWER/LAWN TRACTOR 18 HP ENGINE HYDROSTATIC DRIVE

In the back of the mower...probably under the seat, there should be a lever to release the transmission, or it is on the back plate. As far as the noise when trying to move drive the mower, the brake in the back, next to the transmission is jammed, use a 1/2 inch wrench to loosen it maybe 1/4 turn and this should unlock the brakes

SOURCE: I own a Snapper riding mower, hydrostat drive,

could be a linkage came loose, or that the fluid level in trans is low, has nothing to do with engine but the hydros are prone to failure, also the hydro is driven by a vbelt which can stretch and mimic a trans problem

Does the tractor try to move or **** in any direction, if so you may want to check to see if the disk that controls the brakes is stuck, I've seen this many times.

SOURCE: Broken rear axle on my Honda hydrostatic drive push mower

The last time I had a Honda mower in my repair shop I noticed that Honda doesnt do individual parts on its transmissions for mowers OR tillers.

You can fix this mower...but the transaxles are a bit expensive. Honda mowers do tend to be worth it though.

If the axle broke cleanly maybe someone would weld it back together?
I mean, the wheels dont turn that fast that balance would be an issue right? And I am sure the axle metal is cold rolled steel....which is to say it isnt thin cast material that would resist welding. If you take the transmission out of your mower and just take the parts to a good jobber maybe they would give it a try for 10-20 bucks? Dont expect a guarantee...but, for 20 bucks most shops wont even pick up a mower let alone try to fix it.

If this gives you another couple of years of service that would give you time to consider a replacement mower when the unit needs service again.

Good luck and be careful!

SOURCE: husquvarna hydrostatic mower won't move

Sounds like the belt going to the hydrostate broke. Or a key on one of the pulleys broke. The belt runs inside of the frame and is hard to see.

(Simple answer)Hydrostatic drive machines have a setting that allows you to push them. machine won`t move if this is engaged.
Also If park brake is on. Otherwise check drive belt has not snapped is loose or broken. Jack machine up and see if wheels will drive without weight of machine.

Brand new Troy-Bilt XP Horse, model 13bx79kt011 - Won't Move

Confirm the park brake is off. If a hydro-static drive tractor starts but engagement of the operator controls for the transmission drive results in neither a forward or reverse drive of the mower itself, the operator should check that the manual bypass controls have not been left in the activated (bypass) position.

Look in to where the lever connects and confirm the movement. You should be able to hear the hydraulic oil with a slight whine as you activate the drive forward pedal!
See page 18 for bypass setting?

Mower won't move in forward or reverse, it just makes a loud wining noise. I've had this happen before but I usually can get it moving.

If this is a hydrostatic drive. Check oil level in transmission. If you have been running it low on oil, it may be too late for the hydrostatic drive unit. If it has a drain plug, drain it and change the oil.

Wont move forward or reverse-- transmission??

Does it have gears or a hydrostatic (automatic) transmission?

If it's a gear model, sounds like a loose drive belt.

If it's hydrostatic, it could be a belt problem or a problem inside the transmission. If it's a tranmission problem, this is not good. Many of the transmissions on riding lawn mowers are not serviceable - they are just replaced.

There is a breather tank or hose on the top of transaxle. Remove back hitch plate from tractor. There is either an allen wrench plug or a breather hose fitting you can remove to add oil to the transaxle. Add synthetic 15w-50 or 20w-50 motor oil,Amsoil,Mobil-1,Lucas oil or Purple power are good brands to use. Do not use hydrostatic oil.it is too thin.Fill to within 1.5 inch from top which will allow air for expansion. After filling, purge transaxle by putting it it in freewheel mode ,run engine at full speed with clutch out and work the drive back and forth between forward and reverse 10 times, then it should be good to go.

Cub Cadet engine runs but, also will not go in forward or reverse

you didnt say what model this is, but i assume its hydrostatic because it has a drive shaft. is the hydrostatic unit filled with oil¿ if its ok, check the linkage from the pedal to the rearend (hydrostatic drive) make sure its not broken or loose.. if that l@@ks ok, check both ends of the drive shaft making sure the couplers are not broke and the drive shaft is ok. hope this helps.
