Open Question

Dyson Animal vertical portion won't snap back into place to remain vertical.

There's no suction coming from the carpet brush head. All suction going through the handle, like it's locked into place. Was working great but just stopped. Suggestions, please!

SOURCE: dyson 18 losing suction

Check the HEPA filter if it has one. This bit of foam gets clogged over time and significantly reduces the suction especially if you've been vacuuming a lot of very dusty areas i.e. dust from building work etc. Just wash the filter with lots of water and leave to dry before reinserting.

Apparent common failure is that either the thin yellow and or blue motor drive wires that run from the LH side of the vacuum where the "control board" is located down into the hinge / ball area become stretched and then fray and eventually break. Happened to my Dyson twice. First repaired under warranty, second took about 20 minutes. You need a Torx screwdriver to remove the LH panel ( 4 screws) and also an access panel (2 screws) at the side of the ball which permits access to the blue / yellow wire connectors. I replaced with a new wire and connectors having fed the wires through the access hole making sure sure enough wire was available for the movement of the handle. Also ensure that when the covers are replaced they do not trap any wires underneath.

There could be a few things that would cause your Dyson to have no suction. I will give you detailed step by step instructions along with pictures on how you can diagnose this.

Possible Problem #1. The first problem is extremely common. In fact, we probably see between 2-3 of these problems every week. It mostly happens after people take the bottom plate off the vacuum in order to clean the roller brush. What happens is when they reinstall the bottom plate, they put it on on incorrectly. It's actually very easy to do. When the bottom plate (soleplate) is installed wrong, there will be a gap between the bottom plate, and the agitator housing, or the purple tray the roller brush sits in. This will cause the soleplate to be a few inches higher off the ground then it should be, preventing the brushes from even hitting the carpet. This makes it seem to the user that vacuum has lost suction power because without the brushes hitting the carpet, the machine will not pick up very well on floors, but when they use the attachment hose there's plenty of suction power.

Here's a picture of the WRONG way to install the bottom plate. Notice the gap in between the two housings:

I would say probably 6 times out of 10 this is the problem with the customers machine. If you checked the soleplate and it is installed correctly, move on to the second possible problem.

Possible Problem # 2. Turn the vacuum cleaner upside down so the brush roller is facing upwards. I found the easiest way to work on it is to put it on a counter top or work bench. On the left hand side behind the roller brush you should see a flexible transparent hose that goes from the motor to the agitator housing. This hose actually has a lot of strain on it when the vacuum cleaner is in the reclined position. When the first few series of Dyson DC07 models came out, they didn't make this hose long enough, so when the vacuum was in the reclined position, it would put too much stress on the hose, and cause the hose to actually crack, usually right where the end of the hose that goes into the agitator housing. Examine your hose and see if you have any visible cracks in this hose. If you need to you may just remove the entire hose assembly by pulling on it. It will easily come right out of the machine so you can inspect it better. Here's a picture of where the hose usually cracks:

This would also explain why the vacuum works fine when using the attachments, but not on the floors. The attachment hose uses a different suction channel, and when the machine is in the upright position, no suction goes through this hose. If you do find a crack in this hose, the this hose needs to be replaced. Here's a direct link to that hose on our GoVacuum website.

Possible Problem #3. I would suspect that this may not be the problem, but if neither of the solutions above worked, then try this one. Dyson's in general are prone to clogging. There are a few clog ports throughout the vacuum cleaner that were added there due to Dyson prototypes becoming clogged at these points. Here are pictures of how and where to check for these clogs. Simply remove the suction port covers at both of these locations:

Possible Problem #4. If none of the above solutions worked for you, try this last one. The Dyson DC07 models use a clutch mechanism that stops the roller brush from spinning when changed from carpet mode to bare floor mode. This clutch mechanism is a notorious problem with all Dyson models, in fact they were such a problem that Dyson had to redesign the DC07 model to a non-clutch system. Even if yours is one of the newer ones that don't use a clutch, yours still has a belt inside. You can tell if your model uses a clutch or not by the shape of the roller brush. If your brush is a perfect cylinder shape, yours does NOT have a clutch. To check and see if the clutch or the belt have gone bad, first release the handle on the vacuum as if you were vacuuming carpets. Make sure the machine is set to carpet mode. Now while the handle has been released, turn the machine upside down and see if the brushes are spinning. If the brushes are spinning then turn the vacuum right side up and put the brushes on the floor. Can you still hear the brushes spinning when they are hitting the carpet? If yes, then this is not the problem. If the brushes however are NOT spinning, this indicates either your brush roll, clutch, or belt have gone bad.

    I'm sorry to hear your DC28 doesn't seem to be working correctly. It sounds as though the change-over valve may be jammed - this diverts the suction to the hose when you remove the wand, and back to the cleaner head when you replace the wand on your machine.

    Theres a part on the side that is free to move when u pull machine down for using it diverts suction.sometimes they get stuck pull handle right down to floor level turn machine over and check on the side at hinge part

    Animal ball great on tiles but carnt push it on a thick carpet turn it off and it's fine but turned on no chance ,, get cheep vac out that's fine ,, head by the way not blocked all free


    Yes that's a nappy carpet verses long brushes, plus awesome suction. If you have a trigger to relieve suction a bit you will just have to nurse it. One direction of nap is always easier than the other. Eventually your Dyson will suck yourcarpet up, making it thinner, and the engine will tire and those long brushes will wear down and it will be just right

    Brand new dyson DC40 has no suction at bottom

    DC40 is a powerful mid-size Dyson upright vacuums, and we wouldn't expect you to have any concerns about performance on hard flooring or carpet. As long as the machine is used and maintained as described in the User guide we would not anticipate a change in performance, and we're on hand to help if Dyson owners need assistance.

    It's important to note that for effective pickup, the cleaner head needs to form a close seal with the floor surface. Simply placing a hand under the cleaner head does not give an accurate idea of suction as you're not creating a seal, as you would be when you place your hand right across the end of the wand or hose. If you turn on and recline the vacuum, turn off the brush bar then lower the cleaner head onto something like a sheet of newspaper, you should see the newspaper held tightly against the soleplate by the vacuum's powerful suction.

    My dyson hose sucks good but, when i put handle down, it won't **** but brush does turn


    I just had the same problem....suction from wand, but no suction from soleplate, the brush bar spins. Did all the troubleshooting steps on dyson.com but they didn't work...dyson.com says need to take to repairman, being a diyer I went to search engine. I didn't find a fix, however I found one myself....it appears the vac can get stuck in floor mode or in between modes....the dial on top on dc07 ....selector of floor or carpet..try pushing it back and forth to see if that puts it in carpet mode...check for suction or try vacuuming...if that doesn't work, looking at vac from behind vac on the right hand side is the selector dial..on top of bottom portion of vac.....with vac in upright position, recline it as if about to vacuumn floor...look down at selector area ...you should be able to see a rectangular type button exposed ..push this to reset position...you may have to push it a few times...then try vacuumniing.....I finally had suction from soleplate!! Another tipoff to this problem is my selector dial would not stay in place would pop I to carpet by itself, but only halfway....fro a long time my vac would work but not very well...had to go over same area.4-5 times..What a workout! The first time I contacted dyson via tele the rep had me remove some stuff and I was able to look at area below selector...what I saw was two holes, one hole was only over the other hole half way...hence at that time I had only part suction since holes were not aligning properly....I read somewhere as a further tip to get suction to engage, while vac is reclined step on front edge of vac head it said you'll get more suction that way, I haven't tried that, but thought it may help someone

    Suction loss when handle is tipped back to clean carpet


    can any one help,
    Our Dyson Animal vacuum has plenty of suction when it is upright and the attachments are being used off the hose, but when the handle is tipped back to begin cleaning carpets the beater head is getting no suction. As the handle is being tipped back you can hear what sounds like a flapper valve in the body of the vacuum opening and then all the suction just goes away.
