Had a Whipple surgery 7 years ago, starting to have stomach aches, constant nausea, diarrhea, blotting, what should I be most concerned about

Carla: According to EChospitals.edu: "Q. What are the long-term effects of the Whipple procedure?
A. Most patients will completely recover from their operation within two months. In some cases, it may take up to six months to recover from the surgery. Most patients will need to take a daily vitamin with iron. Some patients will have temporary trouble regulating their blood sugar levels. Your doctor will determine if you need long-term medication to control your blood sugars. Some patients (i.e., overweight patients and pre-existing diabetics) may require insulin after their surgery. "

However, as an RN, I would say the most common problems years later can be development of scars that cause abdominal pain. Many people have this cared for by a procedure known as lysis of adhesions.

Need to get relief from sciatica pain

Oral medications (tablets) include:
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen, aspirin, or NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen [Advil, Motrin], ketoprofen, or naproxen [Aleve])
  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol) andnonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugslike aspirin and ibuprofen. You can buy these medicines without a prescription. Some of them also come in stronger doses. For those, you'll need a prescription.
  • Muscle relaxants . Also called sedatives, these medicines can help when you get strong muscle spasms along with lower back pain. Side effects, such as drowsiness, are common.
  • Narcotic pain medicines. These are very strong medicines that you may use to ease sudden, severe back pain. They are usually taken for only 1 to 2 weeks. People with chronic low back pain may take them for longer periods. You can take these drugs without becoming addicted.
  • Antidepressants . Some of these medicines, such as amitriptyline and duloxetine, not only treat depression but also may help with chronic pain.
See your doctor/GP for a proper prescription if your pain is really severe. However, usually painkillers are a short term solution, but are easily obtainable.

Can long term back pain cause depression? My husband has suffered from chronic back problems for years and I think it may be affecting his state of mind

Yes - I think there is actually quite a strong link between chronic pain and depression which makes sense. If you are in pain for ages and nothing really helps it can really bring you down and affect your quality of life.

You should encourage your husband to speak to his doctor as sometimes anti depressants can help both with pain relief and state of mind.

I heard from a friend that anti-depressants are good for treating chronic back pain. Is that true for people who are not depressed as well?

Sometimes doctors use anti-depressants from the tricyclic family to treat pain conditions. You don't have to be depressed to benefit from these drugs as the dosage used to deal with pain conditions is not the same dose give for depression.

Can acupuncture help to heal back pain?

acupuncture is an alternative therapy that involves inserting tiny thin needles into various points of the body. It has been reported to help reduce back pain and the stress that is associated with it. You would need to do a course of treatments as it isn't something that passes with one session.
