SOURCE: Generator hard to start. Kick back

This sounds like the timing is off. Remove the spark plug and pull the cord to see if there is less tension. If there is less tension then you know that the pull cord is fine. Do a compression check on the cylinder, it should be around 100psi. Remove the valve cover and check to see if valves are moving when your pulling the cord. The valves could have came off the rockers.

SOURCE: my toro sel propelled lawn mover is not starting

You probably have grass or other debris caught up on the drive shaft. Turn the mower over, and where the drive shaft (that the blade rides on) disappears into the mower, squirt some WD-40. Make sure to go around the circumference of the shaft.

Then turn the blade by hand (carefully -- you might want to wear thick gloves) and apply some more WD-40. The blade should become easier to turn, which will allow your pull cord to be pulled all the way out.

If the cord pulls farther than it did before but still not far enough, repeat the procedure and apply more WD-40 or oil.

SOURCE: Have a 2-cycle MTD garden

You will have to disassemble the machine down to the starter/recoil unit. Once you're there, you can inspect/diagnose what caused the problem and either order some new parts or rewind the starter rope and hope it doesn't happen again (which it will because of how poorly engineered and cheaply made the units are).

SOURCE: when i pull the cord on my lawnmower it kicks back and pulls the cord out of my hand

sounds like the SHEAR pin is broken, replace shear pin, this can cause the timing on the motor to be off. it is designed to protect the motor from hitting a stump, a rock, etc.

I had to change body chassis on husqvarna 240 chain saw, put back together and started once, then died, now won't start and gas comes out muffler. What did I do wrong

The unit is definitely seriously flooded. Dry the unit out and try to restart. Do not pull the starter rope more than 3-4 times with unit on choke. Kick it back to fast idle to start. If it floods again, recheck your fuel lines to make sure they are correct.

How do I fix a Craftsman gas-powered push lawn mover that won't start? Already tried a new spark plug, and there is gas in the tank. Engine doesn't even begin to turn over

You need to add more info. When you pull the cord does the engine spin? If not the engine is seized or there is something stuck in the blade or the blade brake is stuck on.
If it does spin the take the spark plug out, attach the wire to the plug, lay the plug on a metal part of the engine and pull the cord. You should see spark jump across the gap. If you have spark then you have no fuel getting into the engine.

Repair of pull start to garden blower

To replace the pull cord line:

If your pull cord is still attached to the grab handle, it's likely your spring is still wound. Follow this if this is the case, purchase rope of the correct length (or cut) and the correct diameter at your local lawn/garden store, then:
1. Disconnect the long drive shaft by removing the small set screw and the clamp - pull the shaft out of the engine body.
2. Remove the recoil assembly (About 5-5 torx bolts). You may need to disconnect a wire to the kill-switch at this time.
3. Pull the cord until it stops and use a small piece of wood acting as a wedge to jam between the recoil and the housing.
4. Cut the line and pull the knotted terminating end from the hosing.
5. Keep the wedge tight so it does not spin back. If this happens, you will simply need to rewind the spring back (about five turns) and re-wedge it.
6. Feed line through the recoil housing and into the recoil. Pass line through the hole in the recoil and knot the end. Trip to about .25 inch tail. Pull the rope through the grab handle and single or double knot this.
7. Remove the wedge and allow the spring to pull the rope back into the recoil.
8. If it does not completely recoil, either your rope is too long or you will need to add a "wind" to your spring buy removing the line and wind back 1 more turn. Retry.

Good luck!

I can't disingage the lever to cut grass on my craftsman riding lawn mover. Now because of this I can't start the mover.

the lever moves an arm on the deck connected to a pivoting plate holding the idler pulley. when you push up the lever, it pulls the pivot [and idler pulley] back and puts tension on the belt. if this pivot gets rusted, it sticks and won't release tension on the belt. find the pivot point and lubricate it thoroughly with oil, wd-40, or liquid wrench, then work it back and forth by hand until it is freed up
