Question about Mtd Garden

Cub Cadet-Blades won't stay engaged

We have an MTD Cub Cadet HD 3185. Everything runs fine except the blade. When I engage the PTO, it sounds like it starts to turn the blades and then disengages. It only engages the blades if I have the brake pedal pressed down. But, as soon as the brake is released, the blades disengage. Also, it sounds like the blades aren't engaging with as much power/force as they did previously to this problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like either a saftey switch problem or a bad drive clutch on the pto. usuallly the mower shuts down, not the blades, they may have changed this though. my best guess would be a safety sensor try calling your local cub dealer and talking to the repair person he can shed light on the problem.

The lever to engage the blades on my Cub Cadet rider LTX 1042 KW has no resistance the the blades do not engage. Did a part possibly break off or come loose?

The blades are engaged electrically via the PTO on the engine shaft.
Check the connector and wiring to the PTO unit, or the electrical plug on the engage switch.

LT1046 cub cadet blown clutch..what caused this with new Pto switchpto switch froze..replaced it still will not engage blades.what could blow the new clutch

Are you sure it's blown? Run two jumper wires from the battery or power side of the starter solenoid and energize the clutch. If it energizes and clicks, that's eliminated. Did you blow any fuses?

After reverse, my cub cadet zero turn mower pto will not re engage the blades. sporadic up to the point of stopping altogether. is it the switch or clutch?

I would guess it is the switch. My Cub Cadet has a safety feature where the blades (PTO) stop when you hit reverse. There is an override where you turn the key back about a quarter turn or so and hit a button right above the key to make the blades run even in reverse. Therefore, I would guess the ignition switch is the problem but I can't be certain. Or it could be the electric switch that engages the PTO.

I have a cub cadet RZT 54 that was purchased in the spring of 2009. The mower cranks and runs fine but the blades will not engage. Have looked at electrical connections and everything looks fine.

Do you hear a "clunk" when you engage the PTO switch, but the blades don't turn? If so, then check the mower deck belt - is it properly threaded, and tensioned by the idler pulley? If there's absolutely no sound when you engage the PTO switch, the problem is likely electrical (even though everything looks OK). The PTO switch, PTO clutch, and the reverse lockout switches (near the bottom of the fwd/reverse control arms) should be checked. I don't think there's a separate fuse for the PTO on your mower, but there may be a relay. Even though these parts and connections look OK, they can fail internally. Best bet is to get a multitester and check each of them with the ohmmeter function.

Blades run in reverse and only for a short distance going forward

ok when was the last time you had the hydrolic fluid changed ?
or the oil for that mater ?
oil breaks down
you wouldnt cook your french fries in year old oil but you will cook your tranny with it in a cub or mtd machine 100-120 hours max for the fluids in an mtd b4 they start to loose texture or viscosity ( sound it out)
hydro pumps di die mtd has 1 monster that is quite expensive also have you changed the filter on the rear axcel lately or is it full of nut butter and in bypass mode
100 hours doesnt seam like much but for a tractor it is

Cub cadet Z Force 48 inch zero turn blades won't engage

I hope this will help you...under the side panels on each side of the mower, there are "reverse lockout safety switches", they are supposed to stop the blades when both handles are pulled back. If one or both of the switches are out, the deck will not engage. Also, under the right side panel (when sitting on seat) there should be 3 relay switches, the one closest to the motor controls the PTO., if this is out, the PTO will not engage.
