I have a handy can and had trouble with the cage closing with a tape installed. I found the most unlikely problem the rotation of the drun was slowing up and then siezed eventually.
I took it apart abd it was not a good idea to go any farther into the cage to extract the drum. The drum goes for over 250 dollars the price of half of the camera. Well I figure what the heck I experimented. I soaked the hole cage and drum in Denatured alcohol and unn siezed it. then I blew it out with the air compressor and really made the head spin. Then as I put the unit back together I found i was not careful with the audio ribon cable lost sound but the unit did work for silent movies. It was junk anyways over 250 dollar 3 head drum.

The retractor motor does not respond. There is some fail safe that is not working a bad gear that is sandwiched in between the layer of this cage. OR the rear timing may have jumped a tooth .

Belive it or not there is a rotery switch that is part of the gear train that enables and disables different items TIMING here is crushle and it is not easy to visually see this without the assembley paperwork pointing this out. Holes in the gears and sertain maked teeth have to line up in a certain way and a templet with small studs positioned exactly to fit this , A puzzle if you may. The old tape players would of been able to be fixed if when a gear train broke and it was seen to beable to be lined up again I bet 50% of thenm had this problem and it was not due to a failed electronic component.

Sorry it is not an easy fix from what I can tell not seeing the hardware and that would be a lucky shot to spot the problem...

Can you physically push it down manually? I do not suggest it but as a final before giving up last ditch effort see if it shuts that way.. and see if it will open this may help find the problem or dislodge something restricting it.

Something I just thought of. Try a different tape! The one you are using may be binding in the tape casing and causing a fail safe...

When you put the tape in and shut the face the face latches there are two arms one on each side of the drum .. these reach out and guide the tape to wrap around the drum and the platon ( rubber cylinder shape that the tape is squeezed between a spinning roller.

    Does this action happen?

Plug it in and hopefully you can get the tape out.

Did this work?

Common problem with this mechanism. In order to fix the problem you will have to replace part called CHASSIS LS. Expensive repair, probably not worth the effort.

My tape deck on an old CCD-TR91 Camera will not go down when an 8 mm tape is placed in it. Consequently, I cannot upgrade my home videos to DVDs. Any suggestions?

When you got your camera, did you receive a VCR adapter that you can put the 8mm in and then pop it into your VCR?
It will be pretty spendy to have somebody do it for you if you want it done professionaly.
I hope thisw helps.

Sony handycam video cassette

To the best of my knowledge 8mm VTR's have not been available for some time now. On the other hand there are plenty of Hi8 cameras and players available after market. eBay is a great source. Keep in mind that Hi8 cameras and decks will also play standard 8mm video tapes.
There are also many video tape transfer services that will transfer your 8mm tapes to DVD or other formats of your choice. Just Google "videotape transfer service"
