Question about Canon i80 InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Canon i80 color cartridge switch

I got the message that the color cartridge is not installed, but it is.
Probably the cartridge switch is not working anymore.
Is there a possibility to by-pass the switch ?

    Yes I do.

For as far as I know the BCI-15(C) cartridge does not have a contact. I cleaned the printer head en tested in a different printer and there it is working perfectly, so I think the printhead and the cartridge are fine.
There is a very very tiny micro-switch in what I call the printhead-carrier, that is where you install the printhead, and that switch is activated when you put the ink-cartridge in place.

  • Arie van Eijk Feb 19, 2008

    Yes, I did.
    Click sound is there .

  • Arie van Eijk Feb 19, 2008

    I have to start somewhere :-) .
Any other suggestion to solve this.
Remark: I have this problem with 4 i80's, they were bought at the same time, 4 years ago, and used more or less the same period of time and amount of printing.
Minimum repair at canon will cost ? 70 or $100 .

  • Arie van Eijk Feb 19, 2008

I already did this reset. Did not help, still the same situation.

  • Arie van Eijk Feb 20, 2008

I already have a service manual and a parts catalog, but the information given is not specific to troubleshoot my problem, at least to my opinion :-).

Ok, did you try cleaning the contacts on both the cartridge and printer head? Also, do you have another cartridge to try? Maybe the one you are trying to install now is defective.

Thank you for the detailed info. There is no way to bypass that switch. Say, why do you suspect that it's that specific part that has malfunctioned?

Would you be willing to try a reset?

    1) Close the print head cover, and turn off the printer. While pressing the Resume/Cancel button, press the Power button. (Do not release the buttons. The LED lights in green to indicate that a function is selectable.)

    2) While holding the Power button, release the Resume/Cancel button. (Do not release the Power button.)

    3) While holding the Power button, press the Resume/Cancel button three times, and then release the Power and Resume/Cancel buttons. (Each time the Resume/Cancel button is pressed, the LED lights alternately in either orange or green, starting with orange.) During initialization, the LED blinks in green.

    4) When the LED stops blinking and lights in green, press the Resume/Cancel button the 4 times. (Each time the Resume/Cancel button is pressed, the LED lights alternately in either orange or green, starting with orange.)

    5) Press the Power button. The LED lights in green, and the
selected function is performed. (When the operation completes, the printer returns to the menu selection mode automatically.)

    6) Power off then back on and test.

Since you have most probably passed the warranty period, getting them repaired would be quite you said. I will try to find a service manual.

My i80 canon printer not printing in black ink only in color. what is the problem? Rebecca

I think you have to check the settings on your printer, maybe it is set to print color alone, so you need to change it to print both black and color.

you can equally remove the black cartridge ink and clean the surface, maybe it is stock with dirt,

I wish you best of luck

I traveled to NY and now my printer gives me a message that the color cartridge is not installed properly. I changed the color cartridge, turned the whole system off and still same message color cartridge...

There is a tiny switch where the ink cartridge goes at the bottom of the carriage assembly. If that switch is broken it will never see the ink. Unfortunately it's probably a shop repair to change the carriage or print engine.

I80 black cartidge not printing

get a q-tip and wet one end in water.  run wet q-tip along head a few times.  then take dry end and run along head again to dry it.  then run wet end again on the absorber side of head.  then dry with dry end.  replace parts, do a deep cleaning, and try a test print.

Canon i80

take out all of the cartridges, and carefully inspect the mating ( chip surfaces ) for dirt-dust-debris.
This could be a sensor related issue, look carefully at the printer itself to see if theres any switches or relays, that the actual cartridge mates up with when installed.
sometimes, the cartridge just needs taking out, and simply reinserting, push firmly into it,s slot.
if non of this works, turn off the printer, and check the cabling for suspected damage wear, or connecting. i.e bent pins et,c.
