Model 720EF. Model No 059040415. The grill will not work. The top oven is still working but the grill light or fan will not come on at all. Stoves have told me over the phone that it could be the...

First things first. The top oven lights ONLY come on when the top oven is switched on. Operating the grill DOES NOT turn the lights on. If you wish to see what you are grilling, you have to turn the top oven control knob on to its first position as well as turning the grill on.
Secondly, the grill only works when the door is open. The grill does not work when you shut the door. When you open and shut the door, you should be able to hear the microswitch operating. It is located in the right hand side of the cooker, between the inner and outer panels - you cannot see it. I haven't seen the switch first hand but they normally come with an arm that contacts the door mechanism and the door mechanism operating, causes the arm to move, which causes a button on the switch to move and make the circuit. It has been known for the arm on the microswitch to bend with use so it no longer works correctly.
If you have checked all above and you hear the switch operating, then it could have failed. They are quite common, so if you can't get one from STOVES, try espares or someone like Maplin or RadioSpares.
The get to the microswitch you have to take the oven out of the housing and then take the right hand panel off. You should then be able to see it and check its operation.

If a selfclean oven door lock fails to open after the self clean cycle and sufficient cooling time has elapsed (approximately 1 hour), there are several things you can try.
  1. Unplug the unit or shut off the circuit breaker for 5 minutes. Plug the unit back in or turn on the circuit breaker. Set the clock and gently try moving the door lock lever (is so equipped) or opening the door.

  2. Set the self-clean cycle again and only allow it to work for 15 minutes. Cancel the self-clean cycle and allow the oven to cool. Gently try moving the door lock lever (is so equipped) or opening the door.

If these procedures fail to correct the condition, the lock must usually be accessed and moved manually to open the door.
Most self cleaning ranges today use one of 3 different types of door locking systems. One design is solenoid driven, another is heat activated and the last, motorized.
  • A solenoid controlled system can be identified by the lever that must be set to lock the door, plus a loud buzzing or clunking noise heard when locking or unlocking the door.
  • The heat sensitive lock mechanism also has a locking lever but makes no noises. It instead utilizes a coiled spring to slowly lock the door as the oven heats.
  • The motorized design has no lever to move, the motor locks the door by itself when the range is set for self clean. The motor may have made an audible whining or ratcheting sound when in use.

A motorized or heat sensitive style lock will usually be located beneath the cook top on free standing ranges. The cook top would usually need to be lifted to access the locking mechanism. On built in ovens, the oven must usually be removed from its enclosure (or at least partially) in order to remove the top panel to gain access to the locking mechanism. On some built in oven models, the lock assembly may be able to be accessed by removing the control console.
sc-lock-geheatsensitive.gifOn the heat sensitive style (illustrated), there are no electrical parts used to operate the lock which could fail, so the whole mechanism will usually need to be replaced if not operational.
With the motorized lock mechanism, a volt/ohm meter is required to try to determine why the locking motor will not operate. The failure could be in the motor itself or the power supply leading to it, including a door activated and/or console mounted switch and switches on the latch mechanism itself.
On solenoid activated designs, the solenoid coil is a common failure point which is often mounted on the back of the range. On many of these models, the lock mechanism can be accessed by removing the rear panel of the appliance. Some models such as built-in ovens or drop-in/slide-in ranges, may have the mechanism mounted towards the front, under the top.
sc-lock-gelocksolenoid.anim.gifFailure of a solenoid style lock is most often caused by a bad solenoid. Once the lock is located, the solenoid coil can be checked for continuity. Some latch assemblies also have micro switches in the power supply that will need to be checked for faults too.
Be certain to unplug or remove power from the range before undertaking any repairs yourself and follow all standard safety precautions.
usually if you are unable to open it after all these tests then you would resort to manually opening the door by getting a piece of wire and slip it where the latch mechanism is and prying to the left this is a last means resort so try these other ways and get back to me with any further questions that you may have and please remember to rank how this opinion has helped in your appliance situation Thanks again

Stoves 720 EF Electric Double Oven Model No 059040415 -when you turn the grill knob there is no light and it doesn't do anything at all - the grill is not working. However, the element must be working as...

First things first. The oven element is totally separate to the grill element. The clock has to have a time set for either the top or bottom oven to work, whereas the grill will work without the clock being set.
The control knob for the top oven is the ONLY control that will turn the top oven lights on, the grill does not turn the lights on. ( If you want to watch your toast, you have to turn the top oven switch on to the first setting as well as operating the grill control).
To prevent the grill being operated with the door shut, there is a micro-switch on the door hinge that allows the grill to operate ONLY when the door is down. The grill control also does not illuminate unless the door is down. There are two options on the grill control - right or left. One way is the inner element only and the other is both inner and outer ones.
So if you have done all that and it still doesn't work, then the micro-switch could be faulty.
Best of luck

Door needs to be closed in cook mode to work. You sure you put the switch in the right way up? Also you could have a dodgy door switch as the cook/cool switch and the door switch operate as a two-way circuit.

I have a Stoves double oven and after a power cut the clock has stopped working and the main oven is not working either. the clock is completely off. the small top oven is still working though. what can...

The clock controls the ovens. In other words, directly you set any time on the clock, a contact operates within it to provide power to the ovens. (Normally the grill remains operational). You may need a new clock/timer. Before you do so, try switching the power off at the main isolating switch and leaving it off for a few mins, then switching it back on, to try to get the clock to operate. You may need to do this a few times.
Normally Stoves stick a label identifying the model on the left hand edge of the lower oven. You see this when you lower the main oven door. it will probably start with a 05 and be 9 digits long. With this number you can identify the oven and obtain parts.

My wall oven wont self clean because the automatic door lock wont lock what part do i change

Hi- The automatic door lock is a safety feature designed to prevent opening of oven door during 'self-clean', or as techs call it: 'self-destruct'. A previous full-power cycle has affected or destroyed a circuit or switch. The most common failures are the door switch, affecting the operation of door motor, or the control itself. - - -Start by replacing the door switch- available locally at an app. parts store. The electronic controls can also get 'cooked', causing a variety of faults, but these controls are expensive.------ On site diagnostics is needed many times. Remember---'self-clean' destroys circuits and controls eventually--every time. Don't let the salesman fool ya... Let me know if this info helps- have more if needed.  Thanks- Ed

GE Double Oven doors locked and circuit not responding

Hi, well this is a brain tester!! I think you need really to look at this in a simple way. Check to see where the door lock wires come from first? Find where the mains power comes into? then if it goes directly to the main control board then check to see if there is any power getting through the board to the otherside where the wires disapear into the cooker. I would consider checking the control board for any signs of burn damage and then look at the clock unit to as these are normally the main components in the cooker that will stop it from working.
Good luck,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
