I believe not. But if coil continues freezing maybe your defrost thermostat is not working

Top half of upright freezer is warm

Hello Karen;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

The top half of your freezer is warm because your cooling (evaporator) coil is on the bottom.

With your unit there are generally two cooling problems:

1.) Frozen Drain - You freezer will go through a defrost cycle every 8-10 hours. When this occurs, everything shuts down with the exception of your lights. Your defrost heater turns on for about 20-30 minutes, defrost you cooling coil and them turns your unit back on.

Most common, is that you have a frozen drain. If you have a frozen drain, when your unit goes through the defrost cycle, if your drain is plugged then the condensate builds up on your cooling coil and restricts the air flow. Use a hair dryer and melt the ice.

2.) Freezer fan motor is bad - Your freezer fan motor may be bad. This is easily replaced.

Ok, Lets get it done. I have faith in you.

a.) Unplug your unit.

b.) With a screw driver remove the 6 screws holding the bottom cover. You control may be in the way.

c.) I know you can do this. Remove the back cover. Is you cooling coil blocked with Ice? Defrost with a hair dryer. Do not use metal tools, you may damage the cooling coil.

b.) After defrost, Is you cooling fan running. You can do this as well. There are only two contacts to remove and a ground wire. If it is not running purchase a new one.

I have faith in you Karen. Call me and I will walk you through this.

Ice buildup in bottom of freezer--puddle of water on floor

this sounds like your freezer is operating properly, except that the drainage of the water when going through the defrosting mode is not draining properly, pooling on the bottom of the freezer and then freezing. Check the drainage hose for the defrost in the lower pan. I would remove everything, place in ice chest, let the unit completely thaw out and then inspect. I hope this is beneficial.

hello, you may have a frozen drain in the bottom of the freezer behind the back panel. So when the unit goes into defrost the water runs out the front and onto the floor. A good sign to a frozen drain is a sheet of ice on the freezer bottom. You can use a hair dryer or boiling water to thaw the drain. Hope this helps. thanks and dont forget to rate me:)

I have a code Er dH

After taking the back out of the inside of the freezer compartment I noticed the whole coil was frozen solid. Using a hair dryer I thawed out the ice and then went to get parts. I asked for a defrost heater and the technician at the parts store felt it was more than likely a defrost heater sensor as they had been replacing quite a few for this brand LG fridge/freezer combination. I replaced the defrost heater sensor and put the unit back together. It has been 3 days now and all is working fine. Thank you FixYa for your assistance, as I am sure your guidance has saved me about $400.00. Will use your assistance in the future.

Frost free model csx 22 g,water in bottom of fridge

I just fixed one like this, same problem. The defrot coils behind the freezer panel have frozen up, or just the drain tube underneath them has frozen up. You'll need to unplug the fridge, thaw out the defrost coils, and make sure that the drain tube is clear of any obstruction, whether it be ice or a foreign object. You can use a hair dryer to unthaw these.

I just hooked up and the freezer is working but the refer is not. What should I do?

yes sound common. open the frzr door and look at the rear of it do you see alot of frost if so the coils have frozen and blocked the air to the frig all the cooling comes from the freezer. now then there will be 3 maiin items to check the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat, and defrost timer if not equiped to check out these item call repair person out and if money is tight then remove the freezer items and get your hair dryer out to thaw the evap it is easier to thaw the coil with out the back panel on it will frost up again but will get you by until tech comes out

Kenmoore side by side self defrost mode not operating correctly

when the coils ar emanually thawed does the water get removed by the drain ho;le or are you having to soak it all up with a shop vac? The drain may be frozen up and that would cause the water to stay in the freezer and product said that the coils foreese over after several minutes does tha fan come on and start moving the air over the coils? theres a sensor that should be bringing on the fan and that should keep the coils from freezing up. On thae back side of the panel is there styrofoam on it ? if there is stryofoam is part of it missing and the air flow now incorrect? Just a few more things to lok at. Thanks For using FixYa and don't forget to rate this solution please.
