Power steering not working

Tried 3 power sterring pumps 2 salvage, last one was a rebuilt. i have the same problem i started with. Sounds like pump is out when turning, feels like it also. some say rack and pinion some say assist contrl valves. Dealer says he can fix for under $2000.00. ''REALLY NOW'' PUMP SEEMS TO WORK< it was a quick thing not slow to notice and getting an answer is fustrating. paying alot for labor to keep changing pumps, still have initial problem

it turns fine no binding, how much are these control valves to replace. does it require special tooling?

  • twarren400 Jul 24, 2009

i guess i'm trying to figure out, Are u leaning towards rack & pinion or cntrl valves. steering/turning is not binding just hard when turning.

  • twarren400 Jul 24, 2009

all 3 pumps could not have been bad. 2 different mechanics were used. to install.

am i looking at assist control valve/ flush / rack & pinion or what ? now i'm getting confused.

  • twarren400 Jul 24, 2009

Is this something i can do? most mechanics? or is it a dealer thing w/ the flushing.

Thanks for trying to help me out, i'm about 750 miles from home trying to get this fixed. not a normal

problem, has to be a BIG MESS.

If i CAN do it, pls tell me how. i seem to have alot of time on my hands for the next 8 days!

    Thanks again

Power steering sounds/acts like its out.
replaced 3 times w/2 salvage parts last one was a new rebuilt. (nothing worked)
96 acura 2.5TL doesn't bind up or catch, simply acts like the pump is out.Drives (STEERS) fine going down highway just when turning(parking) does it get difficult.
have 3 options: rack & pinion assist control valve/flush system. thats what i'm being told.
tired of wasting time and money. dealer said they could fix for under $2000.00. Unless i could come in and pay for a diagnosis!!!!!

    help
    thanks

96 acura 2.5 TL Replaced power steering pump
after it suddenly seemed to go out! back to back pumps from a salvage yard. this never changed my problem. i then bought a rebuilt pump and had the same problem. unit whines when
pulling into parking spaces and such (NO BINDING) drives fine going down highway! i was told either rack & pinion or assist control valve. was even told to flush unit. What is most likely cure?
    Thanks

CHECK MAKE SURE HIGH PRESSURE HOSE IS NOT OBSTRUCTED OR BENT TO RESTRICTED POWER STEERING FLUID FLOW.IF YOU PUT 3 PUMPS IN .YOUR RACK AND PINION GEARS COULD BE BINDING.DUE TO WORN INTERNAL BEARINGS.YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE UNIT.ALSO CHECK POWER STEERING BELT.MAKE SURE ITS TIGHT.

TRY FLUSHING THE SYSTEM WITH CLEAN FLUID, U CAN DO THIS BY SUCKING THE PS FLUID OUT REPEATABLY WITH A SUCTION GUN AVIL FROM ANY AUTO PARTS STORE, A TURKEY BASTER WORKS AS WELL, WHEN U GET IT CLEAN ADD A PINT OF LUCAS OIL POWER STEERING CONDITIONER, IT IS THE ONLY PRODUCT THAT I HAVE USED THAT REALLY WORKS, IF ALL THIS DOESN'T WORK THE RACK MOST LIKELY IS DEFECTIVE AND PUTTING AN EXCESSIVE LOAD ON THE PUMP, ALL PS PUMPS NO MATTRER WHO MADE THEM WILL WHINE IF OVERLOADED, ALSO SOME WHINE IS NORMAL..

If the pump has been replaced then the only other option is the rack and pinion. Dealers are always more expensive. If I was you I'd go independant. The price will be alot less.

I would have to agree with assisit contol valves. Rack and pinion just needs a grease job, if it isn't catching or it gets jammed up, then I would suspect Rack and Pinion, But if everything moves good but is just hard to turn, then I would assume control valves as well.

That's way to expensive of a price they offer. I would charge about $350 at shop. But actually, I would recommend flushing out the system..Seriously suggest it before changing pumps, After you install a new pump, you MUST BLEED THE SYSTEM immediately after adding fluid, Crank wheel as far right as hard as it will go. for 3 seconds,,then to left 3 seconds, (Reapeat this method 5 times.

I am saying to flush the system and control valves.

  • Nate Stansfield
    Nate Stansfield Jul 24, 2009

You can do this yourself with hose and a bottle of flush. And an area for the system to drain out at.

Leaking either trans or power steer fluid. 1 or 2 drops per day under left front area

it sounds like power sterring, check level of fluid, inspect around pulley, if it is wet or oily looking, the seal is going bad, you can put some power sterring stop leak in it, it will buy you some time until you can change the pump

If the fluid was completely empty, you may still have air in the system. Whining is not good. It means low fluid and could burn out the power steering pump in short order. Turn off the car, Add fluid (DON'T OVER FILL), start the car, turn the wheel a LITTLE bit right and left a couple times to get the air out. Shut off the car, recheck fluid, add and repeat until full. If you still have the whining and no Power Steering, you are FOOKED...

Hi,

You need to bleed the air from the power steering system, by turn the wheel to the hard lock on either side an hold it there for about 10 sec.

This should then bleed the air out and return your steering to normal.

Power steering is not working , belt is still good, fluid is good, it works sometimes when the I rev up the motor.

Hi: 1st thing to check is your Power Steering Switch, its located right on your Power Steering return Line. Just Replace that 1st,its around 10-$13.00,If your problem still exsists,Your powersterring pressure switch may haved a loose connection or has went Bad.Try replacing the switch before buying a new power Steering Pump,The Power Steering Pressure Swith is around $35.00.Or Go Ahead and Get a New Power Steering Pump after you have changed the filter.Power Sterring Remanafactored Pumps run around $75.00- $90.00,there are 2-Types of pumps to Fit your Model, 1-with Vacum Assist,And 1-With Hyroboost. Just remove the Pump 1st before buying your New one that way you'll be Able to match up your old pump with the Replacement Pump. I hope this has Helped you, Please let me Know Thank You from d_hubbs

Does the problem accure (1) when making a right turn only, or making a left turn only or (2) when turning in either direction. (1) sounds like rack and pinon while (2) sounds like power steering pump. (1) Rebuilt $125.00 and (2) Rebuilt $60.00

Power steering

It sound's like the power steering pump has gone bad and needs to be replaced, As the pick up truck being 18 years old, you may want to invest in a power steering pump from the salvage yard to save you some money. But if you like to get a rebuilt pump, you can go to Auto Zone and they can get you a steering pump and give you the step by step to replacing the pump. Good luck and hope this helps.

Drunken steering

This system has an electronic variable orifice steering system. There is a sensor on the column at the base, it is a 3 wire sensor. This sensor will give you the tight or loose feeling. It is easy to change with basic tools. The orifice this sensor controls is a 2 wire solinoid on the pressure port of the power steering pump. If you have changed the pump look to be sure you still have this 2 wire solinoid. Good Luck.

Hard to turn the steering wheel?

on the astro vans they used a hydroboost power brake booster which is driven off the power sterring pump. If you are having brake and steering problems you should check to make sure your belt is still on if it is you probably need a new powersteering pump. You may also check your power sterring pump pulley.if this helps please rate
