Yes, it's your waveguide cover and it will need to be replaced.

It provides the magnetron with very important protection from grease and food particles.

If the metal behind it is charred or burned, it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

The metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

You can contact Oster via the information in your owner's manual.

If for some reason you don't have your owner's manual, I would suggest calling the dealer where you bought it to see if they have a number for Oster.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Just purchased and installed. Waveguide cover is cardboard with a waxie coating. Manual says DO NOT REMOVE. Is this really the cover or is the real cover underneath the cardboard one?

That is the wave guide cover and is not cardboard but a special material. Do not remove it but try to keep it somewhat clean of food splashes.

My emerson microwave #mw8999rd shoots out fire from a silver piece of cardboard thats on the righthand inside of my microwave oven. whats with that?

There is electrical problem in your microwave heating circuit. This is a fire hazard and you should stop using this microwave and unplug from the outlet. This is not something you can fix and the fuse does not protect your system anymore. The best choice is to purchase a new one and throw this away.

My MCD1311ST Majic Chef Microwave has a paper that is made of some sort of reflective type material on the side of the right hand wall of the microwave. It is a part of the microwave. It has been causing...

I have not seen a microwave wall made up of such material but similar was commonly used as a roof to the earlier microwaves that employed a stirrer to deflect the microwave radiation in order to reduce hotspots in the food. Turntables were found to be effective enough so the stirrer has been largely consigned to history. Many microwaves so equipped often had the cardboard discarded without apparent ill effect.

The exit of the waveguide is often covered by a similar material but these are mostly only a few inches square...

These examples used a material transparent to microwaves and wasn't reflective in any way. That yours is reflective indicates it could be intended to bounce the microwave energy around in an attempt to reduce food hotspots. It should be available as a spare part if the oven isn't obsolete.

What is the cardboard cover inside my microwave for?

It may not be cardboard - it may be a material called mica which is located over where the magnetron is located in the unit. This is a protective cover and if it is what I think it is, do not remove under any circumstances, otherwise you may render the microwave unsafe to use.

Microwave is arcing on the antenna blade.

Arcing is often the result of the cover over the magnatron (The thing that produces the microwaves) being aged, burned or damaged. If you look inside the oven, you will see a cover (usually square or round and around 3-5 inches across depending on the machine)made from a flakey silver plastic/fibre material. If this is burned or has a hole, it needs replacing and this will probably cure your problem.

Cardboard insert

It sounds like you may be talking about the wavegudie cover. Does it cover a square hole in the side or top of the caivty? If so, it is needed. It prevents grease and food debris from getting in the waveguide, which can damage the magnetron. I would refer you to Danby customer service: http://www.danby.com/page.asp?code=5
