Colors missing on Canon Pixma

Canon Pixma ip4500 purchased Feb. 2008. It's been printing fine until last week when the colors got strange. The printed pattern check shows the first cyan bar seemingly ok, but the medium and light cyan bars are totally missing and the yellow is barely visible.
Cleaning and deep cleaning have had no effect. A new printhead is half the cost of a new printer. Is there anything else I can try before chucking this?

Hi,
since you are ready to find a replacement if this doesn't work, you can try a few things by yourself.
see if the the jack connecting the printhead to the ink cartridge holders is intact(it is a source of many problems in these type of printers)
also. if there is too much heat emanating from the printer during use, its advisable to chuck it.

cheers

Why is the colour in my photographs not printing as they are in my laptop I have added new inks and cleaned the printing heads

Anonymous, there's a whole science of "color management" that you've invoked. First, what you're seeing is truly caused by lack of "calibration" in any stage of your workflow.
Your camera takes pictures, and whatever colors it sees are what it sees.
Your monitor shows you colors, but there's no standard calibration involved.
Your printer prints colors, but it too isn't calibrated to any standard.\

Assume for a minute that your monitor is set up to be a little too dark. You edit the pictures, and lighten them up so they look ok on screen. Now, when you print the picture, it's too light.

I've had similar issues, and have ended up purchasing a monitor calibration tool (Color Munki Smile) to calibrate my monitor, software "Profile Prism" to calibrate my printer, and now the prints I get look almost exactly like what I see on screen...

Canon iP4500 colour management

Try this setting. This might be different but try to point some similar preferences and steps then you can give it a try.

Open Control Panel (I'm assuming that the OS is Windows XP) click on Printers and Faxes.
Right click the Canon iP4500
Click Properties in the drop down menu.
Click on the tab Color Management
There should be a list of color profiles if the drivers were installed properly.
They are-
(Generic)
(Matte Photo Paper)
(Photo Paper Pro)
(Photo Paper Pro Matte)
(Photo Paper Plus Glossy)
The last profile is the one you want. Just above you will see the choice of "Automatic" or "Manual". Click on Manual and this force the printer to use the highlighted profile for all printing jobs.

Now click on DEFAULT.
Go back to the main Properties page and click on the General tab.
Near the bottom you will see "Printing Preferences"
click on that.
You should now be in a Canon ip4500 Printing preferences window.
Look for Print Quality and click "Manual"
Click on "Set"
Click on "Diffusion" and just above that there is a slider that should be all the way to the right.
Click "OK" to save the settings.
Now just below you will see "Color Settings"
Click "Custom" and then "Set"
Everyone sees colors a little different but the following settings print a photo that folks I show them too really like the balance of.
Cyan 4
Magenta -12
Yellow 0
Black 0
Intensity Slider in the middle
Enable ICM not checked (disabled)
Print Type set to Photo (you might want to try the other settings here to see how the prints look to your eyes)
Brightness Normal
Click OK to save settings and return to the Main Menu.
If you now go under the Profiles tab you should see you new profile there.
You can give it a special name like "Canon Excellent Profile Settings" clip_image001.gifor some other easy to remember name. This is the profile you want to use when you print a photo.
That is it...simple eh?
Now the other important part is in PhotoShop/PS Elements. Open the program and then open any old photo.
Under File, scroll down to Print Preview and click
If not open, click on "Show More Options"
Bring up "Color Management" in the box just below the "Show More Options"
For "Source Space" click ""Document"
This setting depend on the profile you shoot in, either Adobe RGB or sRGB. You choose the one you use.
Below that there is a setting for "Print Space"
You want to match that to your source, whether Adobe RGB or sRGB.
For the "Intent" letting I choose Perceptual.
Then click "Use Black Point Compensation" and that is it. Ready to print

Canon IP4500 repair manual

There are three options for you:
1 -- Here is a copy of the manual for free http://www.gondack.com.ar/media/useruploads/files/ip4500-ssm.pdf 2 -- Go to this web page and register for the forum, then post a comment requesting the manual like everyone else and a member will email the manual to you. The last request for a copy of the manual is a few weeks old. http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/58346
3 -- Go to the service manual website about Canon (not a Canon site) and purchase a copy for $8.00 USD. http://www.canonservicemanual.com/canon-ip4500-service-manual

All nozzles are fine except the yellow which does not print out at all in the test. I've cleaned and deep cleaned to no avail

Try flushing the yellow channel with cleaner with syringe. The cleaning function will not dislodge a blockage if it is severe. You will have to recharge the channel with yellow afterwards. You can probably do this with a refill kit.

My printer worked fine when I used it a month or two ago to print color photos. Now it is printing them in negative for no reason. Even when I do a preview before printing the preview shows the photo in...

When you are on the print window at the end of the process, look for a "Preferences" or "Options", then look for tabs or other menus that say "Color" or some sort of "output" mode and see if there is a negative option you can disable.
