Question about Dell Latitude D800 Notebook

1 Answer

S Video Display (2nd monitor) craps out when D800 lid is closed.

Hey all, I just got a 2nd hand Dell D800, with the intention of using it for a media PC in my living room. I have my 32" CRT TV working as the secondary display - it is recognized and I have it set up as an attached monitor. It works great, except for one problem - when I close the lid of my D800 with a video running in full screen mode, the display on the secondary monitor goes from displaying the video full-screen to not. The best way I can describe it is the display on the TV goes completely black except for the mouse icon in the middle of the screen. The sound of the video keeps playing in the background, but no video. When I open the lid back up, the video continues playing normally. The laptop is not going into standby when I close the lid, but it is cutting or messing with the video display to my secondary monitor.

When I take the same steps w/ the TV set up to clone the laptop display, the video stays in full screen when I close the lid, but it severely cut off because of the resolution differences between the 2 displays. The laptop is trying to run the video in 1200x800 (or something) when the TV's resolution is probably more like 640x480.

I tried BS player and Windows Media Player (v.9 I think), and had the same symptoms with both.

I already checked the power settings on the D800, and the action for when I "shut the lid" is set to "do nothing".

I'm pretty sure I have a N-Vidia video card / N-Vidia desktop manager to handle display configuration. I was playing with that last night, but couldn't find a solution.

Has anyone else run into this problem with a D800 or another Dell laptop? If so, please give me some direction. Thank you.
Has anyone else ex

Are you serious? Of course it works fine with the lid open. But I want to close the lid to save my backlight/inverter from running all the time. Thanks for attempting to help, I guess, but next time try to address the problem.

it is not a problem, laptops use shared graphic memory not dedicated memory like pcs do, therefore you cant turn off one screen and leave full resolution on the other.

While at home I plug a wide screen monitor into my Dell studio 1737 Laptop. As long as I keep my lid open the icons and print on my monitor are the right size. When I close the lid, icons and prints get...

You appear to be cloning your internal LCD and as long as it is active, the resolution setting for the LCD is also controlling the resolution of the external monitor. When the LCD is closed, then the default resolution of the external monitor is being used by Windows 7 (It apparently has autodetected the size of the monitor and knows the Highest optimal resolution it will display.) The higher the resolution, then smaller the icons.
To resolve, go to display properties and check the resolution of the internal LCD and then set the External display to the lower resolution.
You should be able to wake the system with an external keyboard, by pressing the spacebar, if the system is sleeping

D800 laptop will not display on external monitor

Most laptops go into standby mode when the lid is closed. To stop this, (Windows XP) click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Power Options, then click on the Advanced tab, select "Do nothing" in the drop-down for "When I close the lid of my portable computer"

Dell d800 no color on clone display tv

Wow I have never seen this.

but check the resolution of the second screen (on Display propierties) probably the color qualiy is not assigned properly.

Something else: check if there's any other driver for the laptop. sometimes with dell they have more than 1 model of video card on each laptop model proably you installed the incorrect driver?

D800 Video Display

If you get a clean picture when connecting esternal screen, then it is just the lcd flat ribbon LCD cable that is out of place, otherwise it is the videocard.
