I could not find the 437 manual (free), but Singer Support has the manual for the 457 model (free download). I believe its close enough to 437 for what you need.
See pp 53+ for cleaning and lubrication. The dogs should be included in one or more of the lubrication points oiled from underneath.
Joe, you might try a larger needle than you're using. You might also want to try a larger leather needle. You machine should take needles up to a size 18.
It sounds like the needle you're using is having a problem picking up the bobbin thread, and that might solve it.
there are little tips on the 'backside' side of the bobbin casing you just have to wiggle the casing around keepingin mind that the back side needs to fit into place for the rest to drop on in. then you have to get just a little forceful with the the little black brace that should snug the bobbin casngback into place and keep it secure
There are manuals avilable online to purchase for the singer machines, SOrry I was not able to locate a site that has them for free.
