5 year old Rancilio Silva with no heating of water

I have a 5 year old Rancilio Silva that has stopped heating the water. I have replaced the brew thermostat, reset it and finally bypassed the high limit switch and still have no hot water. Any suggestions what I can do myself or do I need to send it in for repair? Any suggestions for a reputable repair site? thanks

Hi
Do an ohms check on the element. With an ohms meter check the reading between the elements. The reading should be between 12 and 16 ohms for a 110v machine and 50 to 60 for a 220v machine. If you have no reading or a higher reading you have a bad element.

Descaling rancilio

Use Citric Acid.

  1. Dissolve about one tablespoon of citric acid in the water reservoir.
  2. Fill the boiler completely. Open the steam valve and start a hot water cycle until water comes out the steam vent. Stop the hot water cycle, close the vent.
  3. Let the boiler heat up about 5 minutes. Then turn off the power.
  4. Let the acid solution work for about 1/2 hour.
  5. Pull a 30 second shot to change the water in the boiler.
  6. Repeat flushing cycles (steps 3, 4, & 5) until the water looks clear. Refill the reservoir with water and acid as needed.
  7. Wash out the water reservoir.
  8. Pull 5 or shots to get the acidic water out of the boiler. Run a hot water cycle to clean the acidic water out of the steam vent.
  9. Let the unit come to temperature and look for leaks.
  10. Make some coffee and look for leaks.
  11. Froth some milk and look for leaks.

Descale the boiler with citric acid.

  1. Turn off the machine and let it get cool
  2. Dissolve about a tablespoon of citric acid in the water reservoir.
  3. Turn on the machine and then pump about a cup of solution out of the boiler vent using the hot water switch.
  4. Turn off the switch. Close the vent
  5. Let the boiler heat up for about 5 minutes.
  6. Shut off the machine. Let the acid work for about 30 minutes.
  7. Check the level in the reservoir.
  8. Turn on the machine and then pump about a cup of solution out of the grouphead using the brew switch.
  9. Turn off the brew switch.
  10. Repeat steps 5,6, 7, 8, and 9 until the water runs clear.
  11. Wash out the reservoir.
  12. Turn the machine on. Pump a full reservoir water out the grouphead using the brew switch.
  13. Refill the reservoir.
  14. Have some coffee

Rancilio Silva, after working well for three years, does not heat water when powered on. Suspect heating element bad. But is there a step I can take prior to replacing elements. Also, where can I get...

Remove the 4 screws on the top panel. Make sure machine is not connected to power. Check the thermostats on the boiler, there should be 3 of them, push in on the small red pin in the middle of them one of them should click in. Now fill up your tank plug machine in and turn on.

Rancilio Silvia stopped heating up.

Hi
Check to see if it will heat in the steam position. If it does, then you have a bad brew thermostat, and just need to replace that. Its the one with the red dot. If not, run some water through the wand and see if it is milky? If its milky you have a blown heating element. You can also do an ohms check in the element. There should a reading between the element terminals of 12 to 16 ohms. If you have no reading, your going to have to replace the boiler.

Not heating up the water

Hi
3 things could be wrong. First is easy to check. With machine on, turn on the steam switch and after about a minut open the steam knob and push the middle switch. Check the water coming from the wand and see if its warm? If it is you need a brew thermostat. Unplug the machine. Remove the water tank. Remove the 4 screws that hold the top on and lift top off. The boiler has 2 thermostats on the top front of the boiler, and the one with the red dot is the brew thermostat and need replacing.
If that didn't fix your problem there is a reset thermostat on the front face of the boiler and has black wires going to it. There is a red button in the middle of the thermostat and needs to be pushed.
If that one didn't solve your problem you need a new heating element. You can do a continuity check on the terminals.

No Heat

I disagree... I think its the thermostat reset switch. A little red button once you open up the machine. look towards the front of the boiler and bush the button. Same thing happened to my Rancilio Silvia.... I opened it up, hit the reset switch... and voila! Working again! Here's the YouTube Video on the details. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQdJNm9RV68
