Question about Dell Inspiron 2200 Notebook

1 Answer

My laptop won't charge. I have an iGo everything max charger (my third power cord now) and I took it to Radioshack yesterday and they tested the cord and said that it's either the battery or the actual power bit inside the laptop.

Basic questions that I should have answered in the original post, forgive me.

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 2200 from 2005. When I plug the adapter in, neither the battery charging light comes on, nor will the computer switch off of battery power. When I try to take out the battery completely and turn on the computer using just the power cord, it doesn't switch on at all.

Remove the battery and plug in the Cord/charger, will it boot? If no, try another Cord/Charger with the EXACT same power specs. Replace battery if necessary.

Laptop won't charge

Step 1:
If your laptop charger seems broken, it's most likely because the battery will not charge. You plug in the cord, the lights come on, but the charging light doesn't change or blinks repeatedly. When you remove the power cord, the laptop shuts off instantly due to the depleted battery. There's more than one cause for this, and it's not always a broken charger.

Check the connection between the charger and the laptop. It should fit firmly in the DC jack without wiggling. If it is loose, use electrical tape to hold it in place so the charger can receive power. This is a temporary fix, however, because a faulty connection can create sparks and cause a fire or injury. A loose connection will just get worse over time, so have it sent to a DC jack specialist as soon as possible. Turn off the laptop and flip it upside down. Locate the latch that secures the battery and slide open. The battery should pop out; give it a tug if it doesn't. Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol (Methylated Spirits)to the tip of a cotton swab and use it to clean the battery's connectors. Dirt can build up and interfere with the connection, giving the appearance of a broken charger. Let the alcohol dry completely and re-insert the battery. Slide the latch to secure it and plug in the power cord to test it. See if the laptop powers on with the charger only and battery removed. If it does, the battery is the likely culprit and should be replaced. If the charger is truly broken, the only thing to do is to replace it or the power cord attached to it. Look on the bottom and write down the part number. Call the laptop manufacturer for a replacement charger or search for the part number on eBay. If you purchase from anyone other than the original manufacturer, ask for genuine parts to reduce the possibility of problems. Troubleshoot Mag Safe adaptors

Bring the power cord/charger to a pc shop and have them test it. It might need to be replaced. Otherwise you need to replace the battery.

How do you know when the battery needs charged or is charging

there are a couple of ways to check, if your battery has a test light indicator you can press it will tell you about how much power is by how many lights light up, if it doesn't have one, you may have to trust the windows power indicator. if you go to control panel you can go to your power options and one of the tabs should have a power reading. Also some bios versions have a battery section which tells you how much battery life there is. until they make a charger that automatically shuts off when the battery is charged this is the only way to tell

My Inspiron 6000 won't charge the battery.

Hi,

According to your problem, this may occurs for either the battery of your laptop or the charger is faulty. First check electric outlet where you have plugged your laptop charger is OK. Then check the power cord. If everything OK then you have to change the battery.
