Question about Garmin nuvi 350 GPS Receiver

Reading maps on garmin nuvi 350

I have downloaded maps for my garmin and they're saved in .IMG however after I copied them into my sd card and placed the card into my nuvi 350, I cannot seem to fidn them or else the nuvi cannot read them. Where do I access the sd card on nuvi? I've been to map info, however I can only see my previous maps. Do I need to use mapsource before actually placing them on the sd? can you help me out please. I shall be going abroad soon and I need them.

thanks

Are the maps within a folder named "Garmin" on the SD card? Also, the file name can not be "gmapprom.img" as it will conflict with the file on your unit... it has to be named "gmapsupp.img" and you need a "gmapsupp.unl" unlock file.

Map files on the SD card have to have a different file name as well as a different filename for the map unlock code. They also need to be in a directory called garmin on the SD card. The map file names on a Nuvi (internal directory) are gmapprom.img. The unlock code file is named gmapprom.unl. On the SD card the map files need to be called gmapsupp.img and the unlock code file is gmappsupp.unl. If all is correct, it should boot up looking at the SD card map files. - Jim SHARCNET-USA

SOURCE: Garmin nuvi 250 mapsource

Verify that you have the correct basemap for the country that you are in. There are two maps inside a new Garmin. The basemap which shows all the major highways and mapsource which shows all the street. If you don't have the correct basemap try changing 'Navigation' Advoidance to avoid highways and Toll Roads.

I paid for a costa rica map thru Navsat. I need to download it to my Garmin. ow do I do that?

Typically downloaded maps can simply be installed by placing the downloaded file in a certain directory on your supplementary memory - in this case a micro-SD card. You can either plug your Garmin into your computer with a USB cable or use a SD card slot to do this.
You want to place the (unzipped) gmapsupp.img file under e.g. E:\Garmin\ after backing up any data on the storage device you are writing to. If its a new SD card you will need to create that folder.

You can also save yourself some money by downloading free maps here: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

Garmin nuvi 215 is not detecting secondary map which I have placed on sd card. What is the solution?

The map must be named "gmapsupp.img" on the SD card and not "gmapprom.img" like on the internal memory of the unit.

Garmin nuvi 200 SD card

Did you rename the file extensions? On the unit, the map file and map unlock file must be named gmapprom.img and gmapprom.unl

On the SD card they must be named gmapsupp.img and gmapsupp.unl.

Also copy your garmindevice.xml file over to the SD card too.

I bought a lifetime update from Garmin a few years ago but now my nuvi 270 tells me that I don't have enough memory to install the latest maps and that I must choose only certain regions. I have an 8Gb...

The internal memory of the nuvi is full. Some maps will need to be delete before any new maps can be added. Typically, the map in the nuvi is named GMAPPROM.IMG and a map installed to an SD (or SDHC) memory card is named GMAPSUPP.IMG.

1) Remove the SD card from the memory slot

2) Connect the nuvi to the computer via USB cable.

3) Open the nuvi drive.

4) Locate and delete the GMAPPROM.IMG (or GSUPPROM.IMG) file(s). Optionally copy (instead of deleting) them to your hard drive in case there is a problem wit the new map file(s).

5) Empty the Recycle Bin.

6) Retry the map update of the nuvi.

This method will take some time to perform depending on how many map segments you are sending to the nuvi. Transferring the entire map can take over an hour. A quicker way is to send the maps to the SDHC card directly by inserting the card into a card reader. This eleminates the slow Garmin card reader from the equation and transfers are done in a fraction of the time. No maps will be on the nuvi - they will all be on the memory card instead. To update the SD or SDHC card, do this:

1) Repeat steps 1 thru 5 above. This removes the maps files from the nuvi.

2) Disconnect the nuvi from the computer.

3) Connect a card reader to the computer.

4) Insert the SD or SDHC card into the reader.

5) Locate and delete the GMAPPROM.IMG (or GSUPPROM.IMG) file(s). Optionally copy (instead of deleting) them to your hard drive in case there is a problem wit the new map file(s).

6) Update the map to the SD or SDHC card.

When either method is employed, only one map file set will result. GMAPPROM.IMG or GMAPSUPP.IMG is the name of this file set. You should ensure / change the name to GMAPPROM.IMG. Any subsequent file set added should be named GMAPSUPP.IMG.

I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply - thanks.

I have lost all UK & Europe mapping - except for major roads. This was initially built in to unit. Have SD card for Australia & New Zealand - this works fine.

The maps are stored in specific mapset files with *.img extension in the flash memory of the GPS unit. Each mapset file contains one or many maps in it. Beside that, the Garmin GPS navigator can also recognise and load up one additional mapset file from SD card residing in the "Garmin" folder and named as "gmapsupp.img".

Here are the mapset files supported by Garmin Nuvi 255w GPS navigator:
  • gmapbmap.img - the default base map
  • gmapprom.img - the primary mapset
  • gmapprom1.img - the secondary mapset
  • gmapoem.img - the OEM mapset that cannot be unselect by user (if it exist)
  • gmapsupp.img - the supplemental mapset which you can have one in the GPS flash memory and another one in the attached SD card.
Therefore, the Garmin Nuvi 255w GPS supports up to 6 mapset files, including 1 in SD card. Normally new maps installed by the user will be stored in gmapsupp.img.

You will lost all the maps in the previous mapset file if it is overwritten by a new file with same filename. If you want to keep the existing maps, ensure that you store the mapset file with an unused filename (from the 5 filenames above). Alternatively, you can make use of special tools to merge new maps into existing mapset file.

You can view the name of your base map in Tools > Settings > System > About > Basemap.

You can view the name of maps in the other mapset files in Tools > Settings > Map > Map Info. There, you can tell the GPS to load the map by checking on its name, or not to use the map by unchecking it.

In case there are 2 or more non-overlaping maps available for the same location, the map with the highest priority number (defined in the map itself) will be used by the GPS.

Note that certain map which are locked by vendor need a 25 bytes unlock key stored in a *.unl file in the same folder and with the same name as the mapset file where the locked map is stored in.

Adding more maps to SD Card for a Nuvi 205

You can use GMapTool program to join multiple maps in one single img file. If some maps are locked - you must write the unlock codes in the img file, using this program. Do not join two or more maps with same FID's.

Img file must be placed in "Garmin" directory on the SD memory.

Garmin Nuvi 200 Maps Disappeared

Hi,
Hope this helps!

I wanted to add maps to my 250W. I found the maps I wanted on a Torrent. However, many searches around various forums never revealed how to install these. Found the following through reading and experimentation.

1. Downoaded map image file GMAPSUPP.IMG. Download also gave me "Use code XXX when generating unlock code for maps"
2. Downloaded Garmin Unlock Generator 1.3 by JetMouse
3. Looked on my GPS to find the UnitID
4. Entered the UnitID into Garmin Unlock Generator. Ignore the GM XT device unlock code and the top Generate button.
5. Selected Map Product as Custom and entered the code given for the downloaded image file.
6. Hit the bottom create button to generate a 25 digit code.
7. Download Img2Gps and run
8. Click Load Folder to load the image file. Select the tick next to it.
9. Check the Use Unlock Key option and paste the 25 digit code in.
10. Load a blank SD card into your Garmin
11. Connect the Garmin to your PC using a USB cable. You should see two dirves in windows: one is the Garmin and the other is the "Removable Disk" SD card.
12. Create a folder called "Garmin" on the SD card
13. Select Folder/Card in Img2GPS
14. Click "Copy Maps". Select the folder /Garmin on the SD card. You may need to click copy again.
15. Upload will take a while.
16. You should now see a file GMAPSUPP.IMG on the SD card in the /Garmin directory.
17. Create a new text file called GMAPSUPP.UNL in the same directory (make sure it does not have a hidden .txt extension).
18 copy the 25 digit unlock key into this file.
19. Close the file.
20. Disconnect the Garmin.
21. On Startup it should load your original maps and the new ones.

You can transfer the UK maps to an SD card which you can then insert into the Garmin. This way, you'll have both UK and Australian maps on your GPS. Got to Setup to choose which map you want to view.
