Question about Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi Digital Camera
I seem to be having a problem disabling the automatic flash on my Digital Rebel XTi - can anyone advise the process plse?.. The Owners Manual isn't helpful in this situation. Thanks, Carol
I found the answer and fixed my flash. Look on http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00ODWf
This will describe how, if you have been using a speedlite alot, than the little tab under the shutter release side of the hot shoe can get bent down thus constantly pressing down (toward the bottom of the camera) the small button which deactivates the pop-up flash even when the speedlite is not attached. Just bend the tab up a little with a jewler's screwdriver, turn the camera off and on and voila!! Fixed!!! Dan describes pushing the tab down, but on the xti, the tab needs to be bent up to release the flash deactivation switch and fix the problem. Thanks to Dan D on photonet for saving me a service call.

The solution given is good. I was confused because I thought the button on the side of the camera disabeled the flash.
In fact it is just the opposite it enables the flash. You have to aim at a dark location that would need flash and then press the button in hold it then move the camara to what you want to shoot. You have to use the preview button while you are doing this the flash symble shows up in the viewfinder. Hope this helps someone.

easy, in 'Full Auto' mode the flash will fire when it determines it needs to. (page 15 of manual)
the simplest way to control this is to rotate the knob all the way to 'Flash Off' mode.
the camera will try to compensate WITHOUT the flash
also see page 20 ot hthe manual
(1 down, many to go)
